Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Looking for Hunting Partner(s)

Here and there, I do. I think we met at one back in July or August.

Looking at the season dates, I'm definitely out for this year, but I will be around next year and can make time. Do you wear waders to hunt them, or is it not quite that swampy?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: local spots to fly fish

This time of year your options along the Potomac are getting limited - the water out there is getting too cold.

Go fish 4 Mile on an outgoing tide - that focuses the warm water in the deeper parts of the run on the Northern bank - you'll see it if you go 2 to 3 hours after the Potomac River high tide.  I was there last Saturday around 2:30 pm and I lost count of the Green Sunfish and Bluegills I caught.  Mix in a few Pumpkinseeds and the odd Large Mouth Bass and I melted away the week's worth of work stress.  Other guys regularly posting have pictures of tilapia, channel cats, carp, goldfish and walleye.

I do not recall any posts here of any issues wading at 4MR... I've done it for two winters now and have not had any issues.

DO NOT GO THERE IF IT HAS RAINED EXCESSIVELY OR IT THE NEWS REPORTS A SEWAGE SPILL - the outfall is from a sewage plant... catching fish is cool, catch E. coli bacterium is not cool.

Check with the Virginia and Maryland Natural Resource Dept websites.  Their trout stocking schedules will help you get into more fish also.

Lastly - there are casting clinics that the senior members of this forum put on periodically - and the free advice on improving your casting will make your outings more enjoyable (and less a wrestling match with your line and rod).  There are also the monthly Beer Ties at Whitlow's (check out the events portion of this forum).  They teach anyone how to tie a few different flies and drink beer.

Good luck!

A lot of luck and a lot of persistence and just asking everyone I met who lived out there. Let me know next year earlier on and I can probably find you a place - the guy who owns most of the land I'm on is really big into some Loudoun County farm club.

Do some very heavy scouting before you pay for anything. Lots of people trying to lease their land with little action and if you have any connections at all in the Lououn County farming community, you should be able to get a few hundred acres of hunting land for free. I am the only hunter on about 450 acres across three farms and I got it all through networking, having no ties to the area whatsoever.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Advice on Streams in DC Area

I am heading to Arlington to visit my in-laws for the holiday.  I have a light fly rod and am looking for streams in the Arlington, NVa area that are worth hitting.  I have a Va license but don't want to have to get a DC license so the Potomac is out.  Any suggestions?  Is Accotink Creek worth fishing this time of year?  Holmes Run?  Also, any fly suggestions would be appreciated.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} local spots to fly fish

My sons and I are new to fly fishing (just purchased kits) and wanted to ask for advice on fishing at the Four Mile Run warm water discharge site. Is it legal/feasible to get in the water there w/ waders? Also, any other suggested close-in locations to fish along the Potomac/tributaries would be much appreciated. Thanks. MB

How's Percellville for deer and geese? Always looked into leasing land over there. Now that I lost leases to properties(due to property sales and owner changes)around Marshall I'm more interested.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Some new catches

I'm visiting my parents for the holidays. They live right outside Hilton Head and have one of those freshwater lagoons in their backyard, so I obviously brought my fly rod. Turns out, there's one heck of a variety of species in that little pond - including several species I've never caught before. Since it is about 10 steps from the house, I'll usually go out for 20 minutes here, 45 minutes there, and catch a few fish each time. So far, I've got a bunch of spotted bass (never caught them before, or at least realized they were spots), largemouths, a variety of sunfish, a couple black crappie (never got one of them before either), a warmouth (another first, and yes, I realize this falls into the sunfish category), and today I even pulled out a flathead catfish. The bass haven't been anything special so far - my biggest is around 14", but there are some slabs of sunfish in there. I've attached a few pictures. The catfish was probably a good 3 lbs. A white booglebug (Amnesia bug - long thin one) has done very well, along with woolly buggers in black and in olive. Next, I'm trying to get some of the GIANT grass carp in there. These things are all 30" plus at a minimum, but so far, I've scared them all before even starting my cast.

I'm supposedly doing a kayak redfish trip tomorrow, but with wind forecasts of 30 mph, not sure I'll get out or fly fish. I'll report back with anything interesting.

Hi TPFR,

Any stripers being caught recently?

I've been getting tons of schoolies up north (CT).  I'll be back in DC for Thanksgiving and might like to try to get some schoolies.

Let me know if you guys have any suggestions!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Virginia Beach info needed

I can't remember where, but I recall reading within the last couple of months that there was signage posted somewhere along Lynnhaven Inlet that you can't shore fish from there.  You might want to call Oceans East 2 Tackle Shop (they are physically located on the NorthHampton Blvd exit off of I64 - east bound less than a mile from the exit on the south side of the road) to find out for sure.  I think it is the area next to the boat ramp.  That would be a long drive made longer if you can't shore fish there.  Another way to check is to scan the Pirates of Lynnhaven forum - kayak fishing group down there.

Then again, you could always just fish and claim you can't read if anyone even approaches you...  I know I can't read...

There are puppy drum in there, flounder (which yes will take a streamer near bottom, and are good sport and great eating), sometimes bluefish, and stripers - in low light. Full disclosure I never caught a striper there, but others did and the place is highly recommended as a shore access spot.  You have to pay for parking.  Cash only.  Honor system.  Also if you drive into the far western edge of the neighborhood called Ocean View, park, then walk onto the beach and walk west until you get to where it ends looking at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, that is also a popular spot. Another thing to do is start at Lynnehaven inlet and walk west on the bay side and shore cast. Hard on the bay side spots if fly fishing as winter pattern wind will be in your face. The inlet is a bit more fly friendly.

Don't wade at Lynnehaven inlet especially on fast moving tide. Current is savage, drop off is steep and deceptive, the sandy bottom is tricky. People get killed wading there, allegedly. There's decent casting room from shore especially if you are shooting a sinking/sink tip line.

Be advised there are no fly shops in the area. Bass pro in Hampton has a small supply of fly gear. Not many people fly fish in VA beach. Not sure why.  Oceans East tackle shop on Northampton Blvd is a good place to get advice - on lures and bait and locations.  Chartreuse, white, pink, and combination grubs and jigs seem to be the ticket. Chartreuse & white clousers as we know work just about anywhere. Don't go too big, though.  My experience with lures and flies from shore was 3-4 inches max worked best. Not too heavy 1/4 -3/4 oz jig heads.  If fly fishing use a sink tip (I like the integrated 25-30 foot fast sink variety for this kind of environment. Flouro tippet no heavier than ~12 lb. don't use wire unless blues start cutting you off.

Good luck.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Virginia Beach info needed

Thank you so much for sharing the information, very helpful! I was just thinking to pick up saltwater fly fishing again. I started my saltwater fishing in New England, so I really like the surf fishing. I have a 9wt xi2 and a 7wt 12'6" spey rod.

I wonder if you could give more information about the fishing season, like which month, what species to target?

Also, both of my 9wt SH and 7wt DH have sink tip, and of course the Spey can cast farther than then SH. If I don't stand in the water as you suggested, can I still do the spey casting?

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} switch rod for steelhead

Currently, I have single hand xi2 7wt and 9wt and I also have a 7wt TCX 12'6" spey rod same as John's. On last year salmon river trip, I caught steelhead on the spey rod and also found it was easy to break the 12lb tippet if I hooked a king. I didn't fish this year because of graduation and job hunting. I have just located a job in Maryland so it is the time to think about future fishing plan. I plan to do more steelhead fishing and consider to get a 7wt 10ft SH rod for nymphing steelhead. Couple of my friends suggested me to consider 11 ft swtich rod because it is lighter than a spey and don't need to worry about space. However recommended 5wt or 6wt for steelhead and I wasn't sure about it is good for steelhead. Maybe I should just use the 12'6" spey and see if I really need a lighter 11ft switch. Thanks!

Good luck.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} switch rod for steelhead

Yeah... I went to Salmon River last Sept/Oct and I used 13'-6" spey rod. I don't have to worry about the space or tree in the back in some area.....

Agree with Scott, 7s and 8s are the norm.  I have a 7 and have use it from here to Alaska on fish up to 20 lbs., so I think they are perfectly adequate for most GL Steelhead.  But, if throwing the chicken flies is your thing, or if you plan to overlap with the run of Kings up there, the 8 may be a better choice.  Can't really go wrong with either.  Have fun in the search!

I think you'd be happy with an 11-foot 8 weight.

Thanks!
