Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Sling Packs / Alternate to vests

This seems like a good alternative: an inflatable fishing vest:  http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/hodgman-fly-and-floatation-inflatable-vest.aspx?a=406160

I have three inflatable PFDs.  I  have some recharge gas cylinders for the original one and I decided one day to jump into a pool and test it.  It inflated very quickly and forcefully and I had it cinched a little too tight at the bottom.  It caused quite a discomfort till I could get the strap loosened and after that I wore it loose knowing that it was easier to tighten up after inflation then the other way around.  Having said this I would be hesitant to wear anything over the inflatable including a jacket or sling pack.  After that I bought an inflatable belt pack but I am not sure where it is right now.  I'll have to look it up.  I would advise that you blow that inflatable up with the oral inflation tube while it is under what you wear and get a sense of what would happen if you suddenly went swimming.

Back when I first moved to the DC area (mid-1980s) I hooked up with the Potomac River Smallmouth Club. One thing they emphasized back then (and still?): don't go wading without a PFD. And I learned to always wear a PFD.

Problem is, that affects how you carry your stuff, and what you carry it in. I've tried life jackets with pockets, but over time decided the pockets wouldn't let me carry enough. I tried a vest over a PFD, but that's a little clunky. I've tried a PFD plus fanny (excuse me, "lumbar") pack, but that always gets dunked (I always end up wading deeper than I planned) and isn't all that handy when you try to rotate it to the front with your PFD in the way. Etc.

Recently I've shifted to an inflatable PFD, which takes up less room, and a sling pack over that -- it sits out of the way most of the time (so shouldn't interfere with inflating the PFD if needed), and can be accessed relatively easily. The downside: most sling packs have large spaces for gear, not particularly well divided, so I sometimes have to go hunting for what I'm after.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if others are wearing PFDs or not. If not, it's certainly easier to get packs that work well. But I still worry a bit about not wearing a PFD.

Of course, I've fished a bit on big western trout rivers with much faster (and colder!) water and no one wears PFDs. But at least the footing is generally better there. By contrast, the Potomac riverbed can be a real bear to walk on with all the big rocks.

I don't recognize that mushroom, and when dealing with fungi that means I do NOT eat it.  ;).  I haven't been morel hunting in a while -- those guys can be pretty weird, and kind of territorial unless you tell them you're just looking for salamanders ;).

You could approach a novel food source like Norway rats -- eat a very tiny piece and wait to see if you become ill or die.  I use that technique all the time in Indian and Ethiopian food joints in DC.

Try the Widewater area of the C&O near Great Falls on the Md. side -  Towpath near Anglers has been repaired (took 4 years) and parking's a bear these days near Old Angler's Inn so it might be worth it to pay the fee to enter Great Falls Park and then walk down the towpath to suitable water, such as the outfall from some of the locks.  You'll get lots of practice with roll casts and watch your back cast because of the numbers of bikers, walkers and runners that are bound to be out given this weekend's weather forecast.

Problem is, that affects how you carry your stuff, and what you carry it in. I've tried life jackets with pockets, but over time decided the pockets wouldn't let me carry enough.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Sling Packs / Alternate to vests

In my younger days a full fishing vest caring way more gear and flys I could use in a month was no big deal, this past year after several outings I found myself saying " I got to lighten the load." Sounds like the sling pack is the way to go, now I need to think small when buying or I will only be shifting the load.

I agree with rob, take her to 4mr. Go to the end of S Eads St. and park on the road. Walk down the stairs and there's plenty of fish right there.

Brendan's post was a funny read, but kind of sad too because I think it is perfectly representative of the life cycle of any long term relationship. Men draw emotional/spiritual/etc substance predominantly through work and escapist solitary acts of self gratitude (fishing, working on cars, sports) while women draw theirs from social activities with community and family; from the proximity and quality of their interpersonal relationships. The two wellsprings are such worlds apart it is depressing. The constant interplay of compromise and sacrifice to maintain relationships is staggering. I'm sure evolution confered some kind advantage which led to this divide, but it still sucks.

If you really like that girl don't take her fishing. Lie to her about your work hours when you need to and practice activities of personal fulfillment in secrecy.

While there are plenty of guys that would teach a female friend how to fish... there aren't many women that will want to fish that have never fished before. Think about that and realize that you're the one that is mislead =P

Tootsie Rolls won't take your car, your dog, and run off with your best friend leaving you a snivelly mess in your empty living room living out a bad country song.  Or so I've heard.

I don't know Rich - my loyalty to anyone is almost entirely dependent upon access to a reasonably large supply of free Tootsie Rolls ;).

When I stared a few months ago I tried to seek out ideas of friendship, community, supporting local business, environmentalism, camaraderie, etc. but those well all hollow and useless dead ends.

Tootsie Rolls have given my life meaning in the end, and I'm comfortable with that ;).

I think we also understand that there are times when you need to be price conscious, and you know, we have a solution for that too.  All the shops in the area carry a good range of products from low to high end, and although the prices in the fly fishing industry are the same no matter where you are in the country for most products, we all have alternatives if need be.  We even have sales sometimes.

Your local shops are here to help you enjoy your sport/craft/addiction.  That means help you choose the appropriate gear, help you find fish locally and somewhere distant where you'll vacation, and help you understand the consequences of your actions, both positive and negative.  The shop employees will have his or her own morals, standards, and things that make fly fishing appeal to them.  We'll have brand loyalty, bias towards or against certain products or fishing techniques, and even opinions on other fishermen and ethics like conservation, catch & release, and fishing regulations.

In the end, put some faith into your local shops and let us do what we do best – be there FOR you and help you the best way we can.

Regards,

R
