Also when talking Scottish, we should probably use "whisky"--unless of course you've had a couple and then no one's complaining.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} single malt and fly fishing

What a great post! And cheers to RSW for the buffalo trace mention.

A bit of a bourbon man myself, and nothing beats Bookers. But I'll never turn down Paddy's Irish whiskey.

For a Guiness alternative, try Murphys Irish Stout. Great smokey taste.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Salmon and Steelhead Trip - October

Haha. Thats funny. Went through about 10 songs before deciding on this one.  Each changes the tone quite a bit.
We used 8 weights b/c of the salmon mostly, but can get away with a 6 or7 weight for steelhead. Since you are fishing light line, the lighter rods actually do a better job of protecting the tippet.  Still, you lose way more than you land!

I can't even picture catching massive fish like that on my fly rod.  What weight tacke do you use for that, 8?

thanks for posting -- it helps me dream about going up to NY.

A buddy and I took a trip up to the Salmon River in Pulaski a couple of weeks ago.  I know a few of you have either gone recently or plan to go, so I thought you all might enjoy hearing about the trip and seeing the video, which is my first attempt at trying to document my angling adventures.  We fished in the Douglaston Salmon Run (which has a great website and fishing report), and lucked out with some fantastic fishing for most of three days. If you go, be ready for some crowds, at least if you are chasing salmon.  Since you cant keep the steelhead, most of the crowds stop fishing after the salmon run ends, and leave the river much less crowded for those chasing steeheads and browns (which are infinitely more fun to catch anyway). Hope you like the video...

Yeah, I'll probably work on my casting this weekend vs. trying to actually fish anywhere.  Fishing is generally terrible after flooding.

I checked the water level at point of rocks just for kicks and it's ridiculously high.  I would do it if I were you --

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Salmon and Steelhead Trip - October

Great video, a few of us went up in the middle of last week and came back Sunday.Unfortunately, we can't report anything similar to that video, with none of us touching a targeted species. I am surprised to see that the DSR section looks like that, we mostly fished the upper fly stretch, which was raging at even 300 CFS (supposedly low water). I'll have to check out the DSR for at least a day when I'm back up.

Hope you like the video...

Nice video.  Looks like a great trip.  Driven over the Salmon River on I-81 >100 times in last 30 years but never been there to fish it.  Need to fix that sometime. ;-)

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Unknown Catch in Four Mile Run

Hi Bruce,

That dog park with the "lone outhouse" is the place where my wife and I park to fish 4MR -- there's no problem whatsoever with it.

You can literally just suit up and wade out right there, or you can walk down the path a very short distance and hop in there right in front of the outfall.  It's somewhat muddy when you first step in from the bank, but it gets more solid as you wade out.

Don't overthink it -- 4MR is the most simple place to fish I've EVER fly fished.  No exaggeration.

Have fun!  If you catch something interesting, post it!

Prior to this high water there was a tree grounded in mid-stream opposite the discharge.  Is this where most folks start fishing?

I have got to get out fishing more.   My solunar chart said Monday mid day was best for this month.  It seemed better for forecasting hurricanes in NJ.

Hey, I just caught that same nile tilapia again recently at the outfall.  He took a #10 black nose dace streamer and I fought that sucker for about 8 minutes on my 6 weight!  Best fight ever for me on the fly rod -- if they were native and I could target them reliably I'd do it in a heartbeat ;).

My wife took a nice smallmouth bass there too --

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} 4 mile run today

I can't imagine 4 mile run will be fishable any time soon, or am I
mistaken on that point?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Bonefish/Tarpon Patterns

I just got back from Mexico and the guide pretty much wanted to fish gotchas the whole time for bones. With tan craft fur wing. So for bones I would tie multiple sizes and weights - bead chain in multiple sizes and brass eyes in multiple sizes. Also tan and white closers multiple sizes and weights. For tarpon I would tie basic toads in tan and dark colors and also some baitfish in silver colors for dirty water. Stuff that would work for jacks or trevally. Send an email if you want more specifics.

There are 2 to 3 foot waves in the tidal basin and about 2.5 foot in the Washington channel right now.
