{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} TPFR Rod and Reel Library

Thanks to the generosity of Carl Zmola, who now resides out West, TPFR has a number of rods and several paired reels to loan to TPFR members. See the attached document for details.

I would be happy to arrange a hand-off or deliver these to you at a future event, like the October 22 event that TPFR is co-sponsoring with the Goose Creek Casting Club and Chesapeake Women Anglers.

Best,
Owen Williams

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Anyone been to the Tidal Basin this year? How has it been?

How has it been?  I haven't myself gotten down there to get my line wet.

Cheers

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: New to the area

Welcome, Bryan!

As Outreach Chair, I'm happy to talk with you about TPFR and our activities.

You have a great field of study, and we can certainly use your expertise. I know of several connections in that area as well.

Please send me a message and we'll find a time to talk.

Best,
Owen Williams

I am also in a grad school program studying ecological restoration, and am interested in getting involved with restoration projects on waterways in the region.

Thanks,

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Salmon River Trip Oct. 3rd-5th Anyone

Hey All,
Would anyone want to join me and split transportation and lodging costs for a trip to the Salmon River, Pulaski, New York October 3rd through 5th. I will be targeting Chinook and Coho. It'll probably be a bit early for the Steelhead & Lake Run Brown.
Leaving Tuesday morning October 3rd and returning Thursday night October 5th. I've got two nights reserve at the Deer Creek Motel in Pulaski, New York. I have one space open, first come first served. Will only take someone who has been vaccinated against covid-19. Also once we get to the river to start fishing, I plan to do quite a bit of walking to get away from more crowded access points.

If you are interested please email me directly or you can text me

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} TPFR Harper's Ferry Trip this Sunday Sept 10th will probably be Rescheduled

Hey All,

The TPFR Trip planned for this Sunday Sept 10th will probably be rescheduled . The extended weather forecast is Not looking good for this weekend. I'll make a final decision no later than Friday Sept 8th

and will post on the listserve.  Below is a copy of the original post . So all the information will more likely remain the same. Except for a new date and meeting time

Come join TPFR for an informal afternoon of fishing on Sunday September at Harpers Ferry on the Potomac River. The primary species target will be smallmouth bass, although there will be opportunities to catch many other species including bluegill, sunfish, largemouth bass, walleye, carp, and catfish.

Either a valid Maryland or West Virginia fishing license, you will be covered . There is fishing license reciprocity on this portion of the Potomac River between the two states   https://dnr.maryland.gov/pages/service_fishing_license.aspx , https://wvdnr.gov/fishing/

This is not an exhaustive list of what to bring, just some recommendations.

Fly rods: 6wt to 8wt: floating line: you may want to have a sink tip with you.

Flies: WoolyBuggers, Clouser Minnow, C K baitfish, Claw Dad, Poppers, and Zonkers. Other patterns which imitate crayfish, minnows and hellgrammites

Wading staff

Self inflating life vest

Cleated wading shoes

Head lamp

Drinks and snacks

Sun screen

Bug spray

Polarized sunglasses

Change of clothing
We are meeting at 1:30 p.m. in the parking area at the end of Potomac St. in Harpers Ferry National Park.
Take route 340 in West Virginia to Bakerton St. head north on Bakerton St. You will pass through a small tunnel, as soon as you pass through a tunnel turn right on Potomac St. Drive on Potomac St. through the campground and the street dead ends in the parking area. Also shortly after turning on Potomac St. It turns into a gravel road.   https://npmaps.com/harpers-ferry/

Be prepared to do a lot of walking on this outing. We will walk to our fishing location downstream of the parking area. Even though you can access the river right next to the parking area. The river bottom in this area is rocky- covered with silt and algae, it's much slipperier/slicker than many other portions of the river bottom in the Harpers Ferry area. Very easy to slip and fall, break a bone or worse.
I would strongly advise against wading in this part of the river.

Wading anywhere in the Potomac River can be potentially dangerous; do so at your own risk.
Other potential dangers and hazards in this area are
Poison Ivy
Stinging Nettles
Venomous snakes- there are Timber Rattlers and Copperheads in this area.

The date for this trip is subject to change. Primarily if we have poor weather and/or river conditions. I will post any date changes on the listserv.
If anybody has any questions and or concerns. Either respond to this email and/or feel free to text me or email me directly.
