{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: The early bird

Dan, thanks for clearing this up and for sharing the beautiful photo.  Shad are working their way north with the weather--David Policansky just emailed yesterday that the Roanoke River in NC is "loaded with hickories."  Any day now for the Potomac.

Mike, Bob, Dalton, Alex, et. al. can relax and keep trying for number one.  I know I will.  We might have to bring in Price Waterhouse to certify the results.

I'd still like to use your photo; is that OK?  The NCC-TU Shad Report is available to anyone by email.  Send your address to contact@ncc-tu.org, with "SHAD" in the subject line or contact me.  We are well over 1000 subscribers now.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} What are the spey guys throwing on the Potomac?

I fish a skagit with usually with a 12' T11 tip. Grain weight depends on the rod.
A 5-7 wt two handed rod is perfect, lighter is better for shad, but fish whatever you have.

John,
Do you mind sharing how you will set up your 6wt for shad? I'm a newbie to
spey.

I used a Sage TCX 7126 last year which is great to throw with T material
sink tip and for the size of the river, but it is overkill for the shad.
I'm going to use my 6wt spey rod 12 1/2' rod this year.

Mark, is that data available or is that private? Sorry this guy won't count for the first potomac fish, but it should be any day now.

That rod is a 5wt batson switch with a 285 super short skagit. I had about 8feet of t9 type tip. That's been the perfect setup for me in the rapp.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} The early bird

Sorry to leave you guys hanging. Yes that's from the Rapp. She was running at perfect level and color so I had to try. My earliest shadin last years was April 2 and really thought it would be more casting practice than fishing. I just hope this cold rain doesn't mess it up for a while.

I got three fish, but I saw all of the strikes just as I felt them. I've noticed this before in the past, but generally late in the season when it's really warm. Do you think these first active fish were holding higher in the water column or were they way below my fly, shot upward, and I saw the flash just as they took the fly? I'm leaning towards the latter.
