{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: First carp for 2015

To the smart people out there, are the carp shown different species or are they all the same? If different please identify the species for each.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} First carp for 2015

Went to Hunting Creek for a couple of hours today for carping.

I used a plastic maggot on a tiny hook and had five hook ups, but landed only three.

I've gone there numerous times and didn't catch any carp, but today they took my offering.

Probably a bit early for shad but who knows. This winter has been fairly mild so there could be a few showing up by then. Maybe some white perch but I don't find them very interesting to catch.

Rex,

Crappie rods are usually a bit stiffer and a bit longer (so you can brace it under your forarm or armpit). The lengths gets you distance, but also depth. To set the hook you have to lift up, so a slightly longer pole helps. Light crappie jigs or icefishing jigs work well, especially if tipped with beemoth larvae.

If you find a good crappie hole, let me know. BTW, a small, leadhead jig with a white marabou tail (think marabou clouser) works well when fly fishing for crappie.

Hey all - glad to finally contribute. Been lurking around the forum for a while.

Brother's bachelor party is down on the Outer Banks in March.

We've booked the requisite day of offshore beer fishing (his choice, he's not a fisherman - fly or otherwise), but I'm looking to do some inshore/near shore fly fishing while I'm down there.

Anyone have opinion on fly guides down there?

What about shops?

Growing up we used Frisco Rod and Gun for surf fishing needs, can't remember the guides we used for inshore finishing.

We're staying at the south end of Hatteras, but for a great guide I'd happy drive the hour back to Oregon Inlet. Thoughts anyone?

I think you *almost touched on another technique of ancient mystique -- Tenkara. Tenkara literally translates to "through the air/sky", which describes the aerial path of EVERY SINGLE fish hooked by the angler, on the way to the bottom of an empyt 5-gallon bucket. The reel isn't used because the act of cranking in the fish takes longer than "flinging" -- it's all about simplicity.

That said, I mostly don't fish Tenkara because I find it difficult to clean 4" bluegill.
