Royal Lake near Fairfax – loads of catchable panfish just off the shore near the dam.

All-

Any good recommendations for local lakes or rivers to take my son fishing for an hour or two with a spin cast rod?  I live in McLean area so looking for something within 30-45 min ideally.   Really just want to catching anything.  Will be bringing my fly rod with some streamers to see what I can catch as well.  My usual spot is 4MR but looking for some alternatives.  Thanks for any advice!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: TPFR Fall Fishing on the Gunpowder - Sept 25

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone on the 25th!

I just wanted to drop a note re: Bryan Donoway (aka Flys in Disguise). If you are interested in learning a variety of techniques to fish the Gunpowder, Bryan is your guy. He was able to show me great spots for swinging soft hackles, reach-mending dries, and tight-line nymphing. He's patient and humble, and I am sure he would be great with novice anglers trying to figure out this amazing but sometimes tricky tailwater.

Best,
Owen Williams

If you haven't fished the Gunpodwer or aren't familiar with it -- don't fret   --   some folks from our local fly fishing shops will be hand to help.

And for the 3rd time - Bryan Donoway, a professional guide local to the Gunpowder, will join us to help. Bryan knows how to fish successfully on this gorgeous, trout rich river, is super helpful, and won the Orvis 2022 Fly Fishiing Guide of the Year award.

So plan to come on out to fish the Gunpowder River on Sept 25.
Looking forward to seeing you there.

Come join TPFR on the Gunpowder River for the 2nd Annual Fall Fishing Meetup

When:     Sunday September 25th   8 am until whenever

Where:    Gunpowder Falls – Masemore Road access point - See attachment for details and directions.

Fly fishers of the Tidal Potomac variety – we're going fishing on the Gunpowder again!  This is the same event that you have previously read about and/or attended from last September on the water with TPFR.  This was successful enough that we've decided to make this the 2nd Annual Fall Fishing Meetup.

The Gunpowder Fishing Day will be free form - show up, meet folks, chew the fat, go fish, and relax amidst the beautiful surroundings of the Gunpowder.  If you arrive before 10am, some of the other usual suspects from the Sunday Casting Church will be on hand to help.   We will also have a few anglers that are more knowledgeable about the Gunpowder River at the event to help folks that are new to this location or would like to improve their knowledge about this river.

If you haven't been to the Gunpowder, this will be a fun way to fish this tailwater of the Pretty Boy Reservoir, just north of Baltimore and put some of those casting skills to use.  For more information and detailed directions, see the attached PDF.  For more about  about Gunpowder Falls see this MD site.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

This gathering will follow the same guidelines for health and safety that we use for the Casting Churches and Beer Ties.  Please refer to State of Maryland and Baltimore County guidelines and use your best judgment for the safety of yourself and others. If you are ill or suspect you might be, please respect the health of others and rest up at home.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Lower Robinson River

Hi all,

I'll be camping on the lower Robinson River about 20 minutes west of Culpeper next weekend. Curious if anyone has any advice for what's good to fish?

My guess is that this time of year with the temps poppers and streamers are my best bet?

Still have lots to learn so I'm always open to pointers!

Thanks,

Cook Lake in Alexandria, Lake Needwood in Rockville, or try Riverbend Park upstream of Great Falls.
