When I was young - maybe 13 or 14 - I was wading in a local pond on Cape Cod and going after bass in some tall reeds. I remember seeing a monster fish being between 3 and 4 feet long, although that very easily could've also been my younger eyes not comprehending size properly. I made one cast at it and it spooked. At the time I had no clue what it was, but looking back, I'm 98% certain it was a carp. It feels like that was the biggest freshwater fish I ever encountered, but who knows. Next biggest is probably the ~35lb grass carp I caught in my parents' old backyard in Bluffton SC. I feel like I'm forgetting another, but who knows.

I spent the holiday weekend in Ohio chasing fish in the small urban creeks around Columbus. I fished below one dam (got a smallmouth on a black bugger under a bridge). About .25 mile below the dam I encounter a school of common carp, catfish, and buffalo. One of the carp was the BIGGEST WILD FRESHWATER FISH I HAVE ENCOUNTERED. This carp was massive. It looked like a feed lot hog with fins. I've seen some big carp before. The ones at Rio in Gaithersburg but nothing like these. I've seen some torpedo size grass carp in Florida but none had the girth of this fish.

None of the fish in this spot would eat a fly.

We will practice social distance. Pretty easy to do since we are outside. And since we are all holding fly-rods and moving them around, this separation tends to work out naturally.
However, if you are ill or suspect you might be, please respect the health of others and rest up at home. There will be other casting churches, once a month at least.

Come on out, whether you are a novice, intermediate, or advanced caster, it is all fun to work on solving casting problems and casting challenges.
If you are just getting started, this is a great way to meet people who can help. There will be casting instructors on hand.
If you are preparing for an upcoming trip and looking to re-fresh your casting skills, this is a great opportunity.

If you want to wade, just come prepared. We work on casting on the grass fields and in the water, both single-hand and two-hand casting.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Casting Church, 13 Sep

We will have our casting get together on Sunday, 13 Sep at Fletcher's Cove from 8am to 11am.

We are going to have some fun exercises.

1) Accuracy to hoops on the ground at various distances

2) Tight loop (shooting thru a hoop, if I can finish making the stand in time)

3) Shooting line on the backcast (long distance back casting)

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Can you help me identify flies?

Thanks a lot CaseyP for the video, very informative - I think I can tell my flies a part now. Northstreet, I fish at four mile run for, there are mostly panfish, but I think these are good for me to improve my skills. I went to Orvis and Bass Pro Shop yesterday and they recommended me some new flies (poppers, spiders, ants, etc.)as well, so i'll be trying those soon. Daniel, my kit doesn't have a name, it was just a freebie that came with my cheap rod. After buying from flies from Orvis and Bass Pro Shop I can see the difference in quality of the flies.

The top two and likely the bottom right are dry flies. Where do you plan to fish with those flies?
