Hi everyone,

I understand that there have been a bunch questions about what exactly the prizes are for the 2018 Tidal Potomac Slam. Please see below. We've got some pretty stellar stuff that can be won this year, so don't delay and get in on the action. Please note that there is no sign-up cutoff date, however you must be signed up to submit a fish (i.e. don't fish all season and try to submit fish you caught prior to your sign-up date. We judges will not look kindly on entries that seem fishy (pun intended)).

I agree with what Yambag and Dan said about getting guide. If that's not in the books, the site above should be a good starting point. I used it for a previous trip and did pretty well (another location).

As far as tides and flats (for all fish), I'm a big believer and paying attention to bottom type on. Mud flats will generally be warmer than hard bottom. And incoming tide will be cooler than an outgoing...especially earlier in the day. So use those two facts to try to find an optimal water temp which I think is 70 - 85.

If you would like to refine your teaching, I am planning to have a fly casting station at the Family & Youth Casting Call event on April 28 th and I am recruiting volunteers! Let me know if you would like to learn more about this opportunity to practice!

I took the CI test on 8 Feb in Crystal River, FL. In short, I did not pass. The test was stopped during the second teaching task (Task 17). Up to that point, I had passed the written exam, passed all the casting tasks (1 - 15), and passed the first teaching task (this was all told to me after the test was over).
During the second teaching task, I just got lost, forgot where I was, and then just started talking too much. The examiners had a sidebar, and then came over to me and announced their decision. I thought it was fair and honest.
The examiners were generous with their feedback on how to solve my errors with the teaching tasks. I am taking that to heart, and I will take the exam again this summer at Livingston Manor in NY.

It would be good for me to work with another, practice the teaching tasks. It would be good for you too, so looks like mutual advantage. We could also critique each other's casting tasks, and the explanations for how a cast is made.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Family & Youth Casting Call April 28-Volunteers Needed

The annual Family & Youth Casting Call event is Saturday, April 28 from 10 am to 3 pm. We are in need of volunteers with angling experience to help the kids (and parents) learn the basics of fishing. This year the event will be in Anacostia Park outside of the Aquatic Resources Education Center located at 1900 Anacostia Drive, SE. Along with fishing in the river, we will have a tent full of environnmental education activities for the participants to enjoy. Volunteers will be provided lunch and the opportunity to meet new angling compadres. Volunteer for half or a whole day to share your love and knowledge of fishing! Register to volunteer here.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Susky Fishing Report Sunday March 26

Drifted the Susquehanna Sunday. Launched the boat at Steelton/Airport and fished the opposite bank. Water temp was 41 at 10:30 am air temp was mid to high 30s we looked down river and saw what we thought was major fog or rain headed our way. Each of the two of us had boated a single smallmouth by 11. It turned out what we saw was a snowsquall and we were inundated with horizontally driven snow. We fished through till the sun came out and the water temps warmed to 44. The smallies turned on in the afternoon and we each boated 10 or so on flies. My best was a 3.5 lbs (pic attachment - not sure it uploaded). I threw natural brown/white clouser and olive/olive clouser both were productive. Many of the fish were tight on the bank despite the water temp.

I grabbed some in colorado a few years back and really like them. super easy to adjust (just don't lose the gasket!) and leaves the line kink free. I will say that I prefer the smallest size as they are a bit heavy and give a big splash. Nt a hge deal when nymphing fast water.

Only issue is, after casting if for half a day I realized the 15lb test was fraying around where the thingamabobber was hooped. Has anyone had issue with this before? Do I just need to secure the indicator on thicker butt section?
