I would recommend getting a guide for at least one day. If nothing else they will likely divulge some information of local flats that your could DIY later in the week.

As far as flats shoes I would recommend getting some if coral is present. I know some that have used Kayaker type shoes and even shoes that have a very hard sole like Converse Chuck Taylors. I was in Eleuthera a few years ago and a brand new pair of "Flats Boots" that were cut to pieces by coral. In my opinion you're better safe than sorry. The 7 weight will serve you just fine for bonefish.

Once you figure out the tides and locate areas that bonefish frequent I would recommend getting to your for the incoming tide. Find a good spot near a creek mouth or a likely passage point and post up like a heron. I personally found that the more walking I did the less fish I saw since the water is gin clear and the fish can see/hear you from quite a distance away. They don't call these fish the "Grey Ghost" for nothing. Make sure you have good polarized glasses. Even with them they will be difficult to spot depending on what the flat bottom consists of.

I've had the similar issues with thingamabobbers. They tend to kink up my line and make it weaker. I've never heard of Airlock bobbers, but they look great. I'll have to give them a shot!

Check out these Airlock bobbers, same concept but much better design. They're easy to install and move around, and don't chafe or kink your leader at all.

I've been messing around with my steelhead nymphing leaders, and I found a taper that I love, with a short ~15lb section of amnesia that I slip a thingamabobber on. Only issue is, after casting if for half a day I realized the 15lb test was fraying around where the thingamabobber was hooped. Has anyone had issue with this before? Do I just need to secure the indicator on thicker butt section?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: NCC-TU, TPFR and CCA-MD Present the 2018 Tidal Potomac Slam Fishing Tournament

Sorry for all of the confusion here on the rules. Andrew, Trent, and I have discussed these details further yesterday and today, and have made some updates. We've finalized the guidance to have this set for the tournament to start next weekend. Thanks for the detailed questions from all of you.

The fly fishing division requires the use of fly rods fly reel, and fly line, with no restrictions on leader length or weight of fly. Yes, this may include heavy bucktail jigs fished with fly rod, fly reel, fly line, and long leader. I don't think we want to go with strict IGFA rules here, as this prohibits the use of multiple lures and flies, a very common and accepted tactic for shad fishing. IGFA rules may also further restrict the breaking strength of leaders and tippets unnecessarily.

For the fishing boundaries, we want to stick to he nearby Tidal Potomac waters excluding tributaries with easily recognizable and enforceable boundaries, and to include access points for those with and without power boats. This is inconsistent with the previous guidance but we think the following makes the most sense. Western boundary is water generally VA/DC line with one exception (Roaches Run), which includes mouth of Four Mile Run East of The GW Parkway, Pentagon Lagoon, Gravelly Point, Roaches Run the channel inside Roosevelt Island. To the east, the River includes non-tributary Potomac waters including the Spoils, Oxen Cove, the Washington Channel, and Tidal Basin, but not including inside Oxen Creek (upstream of the cove), Anacostia River upstream of the Capitol St bridge, Rock Creek, or the C&O Canal. To the South, the Boundary is the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. To the North the boundary is Little Falls Dam. Participants should note that a DC license is required for almost all areas of this tournament, but a Virginia or Maryland License would be required at Roaches Run and the Spoils.

The websites are updated to include the new details. Obviously, if we've missed something, please let us know.

That rod is plenty fine. I wouldn't worry about whether there are mangroves near the flats. Really isn't relevant for flats fishing. Casting to mangroves is something that is typically its own thing and for different species than what you might target on flats (i.e bonefish and permit). Tides are generally important in that you will want a moving tide. In general, flats generally fish better on particular tides. In other words, one flat might have fish on an incoming tide while another might fish better on an outgoing tide.

I would skip the flats shoes (i have never found the necessary) and get a guide. Salt is a whole other level and a guide will help with the learning curve. That said, even without a guide might be able to catch "lesser' fish (cudas, snappers, ect).
