I have not been out yet but a couple of friends went out yesterday at Fletcher's and had some good luck. They said green Tommy's torpedoes were working well.

I am wondering if anyone is going after Shad this weekend and, if so, how they did.

I am also wondering if anyone is seeing any snakehead yet. They should start moving around soon. I am thinking about targeting them soon in the back of the Occoquan.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Urban Lines got me thinking...

Ed, I live on the Shenandoah and just got a skagit line for my 6wt switch rod. I'm thinking the same thing about using this for smallmouth. Went out yesterday and made some casts, my first with a Spey type of line. Awful casting, lots to learn but this is promising since I was able to get the line out with zero back casting room into currents previously unreachable with a fly rod. Got some sink tips and fluoro, going to be swinging some flies to see what happens!

RECOMMENDED TACKLE:

Single Hand Rod - 6 weight - 8 weight, 9'-10' long

Double Hand Rod - 6 weight - 9 weight, 11' - 14' long (I like long rods from the rocks)

Standard Lines - Fast, full sinking is best, fast sinking sink-tip lines with tips at least 10' long (15' is better). Multi-tip lines with a 15' type 6 tip works great too.

Spey Lines - Skagit lines with 12'-15' fast sinking tips

Leader - short (2' - 3'), level piece of 0X (approx. 16lb.), fluorocarbon is preferred for abrasion resistance around the rocks.

Flies - any small, flashy fly in sizes #4-#8. Many Shad Patterns are available, but a #6 Clouser tied short in Chart./White is all that is needed. Most bright bonefish flies work as well as do classic streamers like Mickey Finns.

My daughter has own fish tank - with 40+ fishes. Is it wrong for me to test my little dry flies (size 22-24) in it? I am attempting to try it but......I don't have guts...
