{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Urban Lines got me thinking...

I can't impart much knowledge, but I did just build a 5wt switch over the winter with the primary purpose of swinging for shad and smallies.  For me it's a tough balance on long rods when trying to keep them heavy enough to cast the bigger bass flies, yet light enough to keep it interesting once you get one on.  I'll enjoy the new challenge figuring this one out.

I also fish from an inflatable yak in the warmer temps.  Some good locations to start in the tidal parts are Pohick Bay, Occoquan, and Belle Haven -- all easy put-ins.  The bridges also seem to be popular spring and fall spots for stripers but I have yet to give it a shot.  For shad, I don't really mess with the kayaks with the availability of the Fletcher's boats.  It's much easier casting sinking lines from a stable rowboat platform rather than seated or kneeling in a kayak.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Tickets are SOLD OUT for tomorrows show!

They are already working on a second showing.  I'm sure the guys at Urban Angler will keep us informed.  I inquired about the DVD myself but my guess is that they can maybe set up a DVD for the local "Urban Lines" film since we know the creators, however since the film festival was a number of small films, it may not be possible for them to get all of approvals.

I do want to thank all the guys at Urban Angler for all the work and effort.  I had a great time and plan to check it out again next year.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} On a shad dart this am

Caught with spinning tackle at mid-cove in the slack water, just off the seam.  A good place to try some big flies.

Wish I could have made the show.

So what is to become of us poor souls who missed the show?  Second showing?  DVD?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Urban Lines got me thinking...

Greetings! Ed Felker here, I have met some of you I know, perhaps through Project Healing Waters events. Anyway, I was at the film festival last night and the wonderful film Urban Lines got me thinking about a few things. I was previously unaware of TPFR but now I wonder if any of you have some thoughts on the following...

I live on the Potomac well upstream of the tidal portion, but watching you guys with the two handed rods made me wonder if maybe that wouldn't be a bad approach for smallmouth fishing up my way. I oftentimes have trees behind me and a lot of water to cover in front of me, seems like spey casting would be worth exploring. Do any of you spey cast for smallies? I also have huge carp that live right off my bank, but have yet to catch one on a fly. Every year I promise myself I *will* catch one this season.

My other question is about the tidal Potomac. Do people kayak fish for shad, striper or largemouth down there? Seems doable, but I have no idea what it's like, I don't want to just experiment, put in at National Airport and get swept into the Chesapeake Bay! Any advice here about viability or access would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance. And congrats to Rob Snowwhite, Kami Swingle and all those involved with Urban Lines!

Ed.
