Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} FFC Shad Report #2

no float trips but I have hiked in and fished the back country lakes in Frank Church. the lakes that took a little effort to reach and were big enough to avoid winterkill were all excellent for dry fly fishing.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Renting a Boat with a Fletchers Spring Fishing Pass

Brian -- Thank you! It's good to get confirmation that my assumptions were not off base.

All -- I welcome any other experiencial advice on renting and fishing from a boat out of Fletchers Cove.  We are mainly targeting shad like most are this time of year, and I've watched the Shad Night presentation and have been reading up on the many past reports.

BTW, I noticed in some of the older reports from about a dozen years ago, renting one of the Fletches boats was only $22 for the entire day.  Now it's $136 for only four hours.  That's quite the increase!

Tight lines, everyone.

Hello all  (I checked past group discussions and didn't find any related info, so...),

I have some questions about the Fletcher's Spring Fishing Pass which appears to cost $230 for the season. I have my assumptions on what the answers are but looking for experienced locals that can confirm.  I've never purchased one of theses passes before or rented a boat at Fletchers, so please bear with me.

1) Is there an additional cost to reserve a rowboat at Fletchers Boathouse after purchasing the season pass?  I see on the reservation page that the option for an all day rental noted as "valid for Fletchers Fishing Pass holders only" shows a price of $224.  To me, this implies that having a spring fishing pass entitles the holder to reserve the boat for a full day, but then must pay an additional $224 to rent the boat.  Is this the case, OR will the rental price just zero out after selecting the reservation and adding the pass number?

No additional charge!  But remember to tip the dock workers.

2) The details page shows "Passes do not guarantee a boat."  Does this mean that if I book a reservation for a boat say at 11 AM, the reservation may be cancelled because all the boats have been rented out before that time?  OR can I expect the boat to be available at 11 AM as booked?

If you book a reservation, you will get a boat.  But on some weekends, you may not be able to get a reservation - it gets busy!

3) I plan to take my family with me on the boat, does every person on the boat need to have a season pass, or just the one person reserving the boat?

Just the person reserving the boat.

4) Does the rental of the boat include life preservers for everyone onboard?

Yes it does!

Thanks for your time and attention to read and response to my questions.

Sincerely,

Andrew.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Sinking Lines for Shad and Other Fish

I use the Orvis Depth Charge (Rio and others offer similar style lines). The first 30 feet has a sink rate of about 6 inches per second I think. and then it slows down a bit. Gets plenty deep for shad and other species else where. 250 grain for my 7wt and 300 grain for the 8 wt.

I used to use this set up for fishing from shore. But it really shines from the boat.

If you are fishing from shore, at many spots the full sink will get hung up on the rocks close in.  Not a good time.  Some spots are OK full sink, but in general sink tip has been best for me.  I used to have an outbound short sink tip with an intermediate running line.  That worked ok.

I haven't been out yet this year, but I'm going to try a floating line/Anadro and add a 7ft fast-sink and maybe add some weight in the deeper channels. ðŸ¤ž

I currently have a floating WF floating line for my 7wt rod, which I typically use for bass. Looking on the various discussion boards, it seems like some sort of sink tip in the 250gr neighborhood with an intermediate running line is the name of the game. Ideally whatever line I get would be multi-purpose for bass in lakes and such too - I don't want to get the "perfect" shad line if it's going to be largely useless elsewhere.

I was considering these, but could use other suggestions too:

I have an inflatable paddleboard, and was planning on primarily fishing from that on the Occoquan for shad.

Considering this is a decently big purchase for me, I wanted to run it by the hivemind first to make sure I'm not going in the wrong direction.

Thanks!!!

Make sure you view the recording for ShadFest on the Friends of Fletchers site.  Also have a look at my blog on the subject of shad fishing.

Here is the url:

The Occoquan under the pedestrian bridge is a great spot for shad fishing.  I use a sink top there of 250 grams.

Good luck!  Gregg Rockett

Thanks!!!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Sinking Lines for Shad and Other Fish

FWIW, when I shad fished more actively (someone bully me into getting back into it) I did better with a full sink than a sink-tip line. I forget what the line was, but I am 90% sure that Grizz at District Angler can tell you what it was. Actually just do whatever he says.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Sinking Lines for Shad and Other Fish

Hey everyone,

So seeing that the first shad was caught on the Potomac made me catch the bug to finally go out and pursue this fish for the first time. But I could totally use some help on the line situation.

  • https://www.cortlandline.com/products/streamer-sink-tip-10
  • https://www.cortlandline.com/products/streamer-sink-tip-25?variant=43507878887640

I have an inflatable paddleboard, and was planning on primarily fishing from that on the Occoquan for shad.

Considering this is a decently big purchase for me, I wanted to run it by the hivemind first to make sure I'm not going in the wrong direction.

Thanks!!!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} PHWFF Fly Tying Marathon at Quantico

Anyone planning to attend the Project Healing Waters Fly Tying Marathon at the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico ought to be aware of the potential government shutdown.  Should Congress not pass a continuing resolution, the event will be canceled/rescheduled for another date.  PHWFF National Capital Region is currently looking at up to two to three months out should we need to reschedule.
