{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: New Members!

Welcome, Peter!

We'll look forward to having you at Casting Church on the second Sunday of every month. We convene from 8 to 11:30 in the far end of the lower parking lot at Fletcher's Boathouse near Georgetown.

Waders are optional for Casting Church (but they do keep you warmer and drier) unless you are joining Regan in the Potomac for two-hand casting work, in which case waders are required. Otherwise we cast on the grass.

Another pillar of TPFR is the Beer Tie, which occurs (usually) on the Monday after Casting Church at The Colony Grill in Clarendon. We meet upstairs to tie flies that are appropriate for local species and conditions. Or feel free to join an intermediate or advanced table to learn other techniques for fishing farther afield.

Do reach out with any questions.

Best,
Owen Williams

I am Peter Walsh and a resident of Arlington, VA. Recently my Girlfriend and I had a guided trip in Forks, WA and fell in love with fly fishing (we had great success!). I have been an avid spin fisher for many years but this is Rachels first foray in to the world of fishing.

For Christmas this year we gifted each other waders and rods. We are excited to go to casting church and dial in our casts.

Looking forward to meeting folks!

Not asking for your rock, just a general area where one might reasonably find some fish within a mile or two of the launch. Would love to meet up with some other folks if they were interested in exploring.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Salmon & Smith rivers

I'm looking for anyone who can give advice on floating the Middle Fork of the Salmon or the Smith Rivers. Am thinking of such a trip and would appreciate getting advice from someone who has done either of them regarding outfitters and their experience, etc.

Please contact me at justawoo2@gmail.com if you can help.

Thanks very much.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Alligator Alley Peacocks....

Had an amazing day with Captain Jason Sullivan of risingtidecharters.com

We hit the canals along alligator alley (I75) from 6:30 to 12:30.  We caught over 100 peacock bass, Oscars, Largemouth bass and Mayan Cyclids, they were attacking almost everything that we threw, mostly small baitfish patterns on a 5 wt Helios.  had a double with 2 sinking flies, but no topwater interest.

This is an incredible fishery.  Worth a trip....

I'm a little entirely shocked at this. Are there other things now that TPFR does that only members of FFI can participate in?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} RECAP — Gunpowder Day Dec 2 - TPFR / TU

In case you are wondering …

21 very aspirational men and women from TU and TPFR drove up, geared up, rigged up, and psyched up. For most, it was their first their experience fishing the Gunpowder.  The flow was low.  The fish were there but could have been a bit more cooperative.

Although not a complete tally, a few of the beasties were brought to hand in the morning using pheasant tails, rainbow warriors, and buggers.  Once the afternoon came around  - parachute adams, griffith's gnats, and 90%-ers were on the menu for some rising browns - and, yes, a brookie.

GTHBA  (good time had by all).  Thanks for coming out !!

TPFR is a charter chapter of FFI (Fly Fishers International).  Moving forward, we're planning more days on the water targeting other species and different locations.  These trips will be open only to FFI members so don't delay - go to our website and become an FFI member today.

Cheers

Well, with the low water and closing of the Shenandoah Park, the trout fishing has been tough.  So if your hankerin' do some fishin', or want to practice those techniques you just learned at those upcoming Orvis Euro Nymphing classes with Bryan Donoway (also on the Gunpowder - see Orvis Arlington), or just want to fish the wonderful Gunpowder River  --  mark your calendar to join us for a day on the Gunpowder.

Grants, permits, construction start expected soon
IMG_4383.JPG

Dear Daniel,

We have made much progress in the last several months toward our project to establish the first fully-accessible river access point in the DC metro area. Here are the key milestones that we have reached:

  • EXAMPLE - Rankin lake Gastonia NC.jpgWe were recently awarded two grants totaling $148K, bringing us very close to full funding (see details)
  • An important and required step, our environmental assessment and application for categorical exclusion under the National Environmental Policy Act has been reviewed by federal agencies and approved (NEPA documents available here)
  • All permit applications are in, and final construction plans have been submitted
  • We anticipate construction starting in early 2024!

As of this writing, our project funding stands at $482,764, just shy of the $500K funding goal. Help us close the gap on Giving Tuesday, November 28 -- donate and spread the word!

Thank you for your support and stewardship at lower Four Mile Run, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,
