Thank you all for the great tips and recommendations. We ended up going to Mossy creek for the day and we managed to catch four trouts and one creek chub. It was very fun and a great experience. The place is beautiful. But I do agree that it is a difficult place to start for someone who hasn't gone fishing before. My father has been fishing his whole life, but it was his first time fly fishing. So he picked it up very...
Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Guided trip for a novice?
Kiki Galvin (Ms Guided) knows waters and reads fish well. Also, a fabulous casting instructor and can give great tips on feet and rigging. Just a followup. I meant beavercreek in Maryland. I've heard that Beavercreek in VA is better, especially on ColdwaterOutfitter's private water.Carl--Carl ZmolaOn Mon, Oct 25, 2021 at 9:36 AM Carl Z. <carl.zmola0@gmail.com> wrote:I've had good luck with Tom Baltz in Carlisle area on the Yellow Breeches. I've had good luck with Tom Baltz in Carlisle area on the Yellow Breeches. Tom Baltz, Angling Adventures. It will be nymphing, so good casting skill is not as important. I would avoid places that are more technical such as Mossy, Bevercreek or the LeTort up in Carlisle. {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Guided trip for a novice?
Hey Everyone-I introduced a good friend to fly fishing a while ago, and I'd like to take him on a guided trip somewhere to get some casting instruction from a pro and hopefully catch a trout or 2. I'm thinking an overnight trip somewhere within a few hours' drive.Any suggestions on places to take him, and specifically guides that can help him avoid all my bad habits? I heard somewhere that Carlisle PA was an option, but I've never...

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} First time going to Mossy Creek VA
YIKES, thought the brookies were done spawning by now and that temps had dropped enough to be OK but I haven't kept real tabs this fall. Beaver-I've gotten there at 8/9 AM on weekdays and been the first car there. But it's a tough stream for a beginner as discussed above. {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: New to the area and looking for suggestions
South Fork of the Shenandoah would probably be the best float within an hour and a half. There are canoe rental places that you can use for a shuttle if you are doing it alone..On Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at 8:53:03 PM UTC-4 Doug Graebner wrote:I know Duncan McGrath used to do float trips on the Potomac between Old Angler's and Glen Echo, so there's a bit below Great Falls you can do as well. Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} First time going to Mossy Creek VA
The brook trout streams are going to be low and the fish may have started spawning. Either way i would probably not go.Beaver you are mostly likely going to have to be there before 6 on a weekend. Maybe during a weekday you could show up later and get a pass.Mossy is tough for good anglers, would be extremely difficult for a beginner although you could try throwing streamers.I would look towards trout water. ...

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} First time going to Mossy Creek VA
I'm not sure if the warm temperatures have delayed the native brookie spawn, but you may want to stay away from the SNP streams until the new year just to be safe. VA has resumed stocking designated trout streams, and the upper passage creek might be ok, depending on the stocking schedule. Just be on the lookout for the guys with the power bait and buckets.Honestly, for a first timer, why not try cook lake in Alexandria?...
Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} First time going to Mossy Creek VA
I would look at the SNP streams (can someone here confirm/deny if the water temperatures/levels are OK for fishing again?) as well; they're as close or closer than Mossy depending on the stream and can be good this time of year. The big name ones are Whiteoak Canyon Run and the Rapidan, but most of the larger streams hold fish. They're brookies so they should be more forgiving even if the backcast room is a bit on the tight side.On...
