Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} old sink-tip line recycling

if I have time and energy tomorrow I'll either go and ask around or give things another crack around 5-7 PM with a floating line-I don't think a sink tip or sinking line is really necessary with how low the river is RN, especially at low tide, and that probably limits your options for topwater.

I did see the gear crowd picking up cats up there. My gut instinct is honestly that you'll probably pick something up working the shoreline on the VA side at least.

Thank you, Brian - yep on the fly - thanks all for the tips - I'll be looking up Eastern Trophies.

Sean - yeah I've taken my Pop on a Lake Anna charter for stripers but hate the downrigging-style fishing (it's more like reeling than fishing). But it is comfortable!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Middle James River and Rappahannock Guides

William at Eastern Trophies floats the Rapp and I've heard him talk about the James as well.

He has a big Moravia  raft - it's comfortable.

It even has a porta potty under the back seat

I've fished with William several times over the last few years -  he's really good - and will work hard to put you on the fish.

He's also an excellent and positive coach - I took my step son out on a float with William last year - he is fairly new to fishing - William set him up with a spin rod - showed him how to cast,  the best type of retrieve, etc.

William had both of us into sm bass almost immediately- and the catching continued thru out the day.

I was throwing a fly rod.

Overall - It was a great day - and a lot of fun!

Highly recommended!

I hope this was helpful!

Best,
Brian

TPFR's,
Our volunteers made the July 4MR Kids Fishing Event a resounding success. Let's make the August event as successful as the July event.

I'm seeking your assistance with staffing the second of the two summer Arlandria area youth program Kids Fishing Day events sponsored by the Four Mile Run Conservatory Foundation. On behalf of TPFR, I'm rounding up volunteers to assist with the August event. The event is scheduled for:
  • Friday, August 13, from 10 am-noon: Community Lodgings (grades 3-6, ~10 kids fishing)
Send me your contact information if you can support this event. I'll provide event coordination information about 7 days before the event.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Volunteers Made An Impact - 4MR Kids Fishing Day

Thank you, Brook, Josie, Erin, Mark, and Daniel for volunteering and making the 4MR Kids Fishing Event so successful. You really made a difference. The event would not have gone as smoothly as it did without your participation. With your support, the 20-ish kids had a great time, gained a new experience, and picked up a few new skills. A couple of kids landed their first-ever fish under your guidance. Yes, photos were taken.

For me, this was a chapter milestone event. Young women attending the event were mentored/coached by two of our chapter's women members, Erin and Josie. A special thank you, Erin and Josie, for introducing these young women to fishing.

Kurt, the organizer, was incredibly pleased with the way you quickly handled the various rod and reel issues and how fast you got the kids back to fishing. You made the event run so much smoother than Kurt was expecting with the number of kids.

On behalf of the chapter, thank you for volunteering.

PS: We have another 4MR Kids Fishing event in August. Contact me directly if you can volunteer.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: 10-year striped moratorium?

Given how iffy the striper population has been overall (even if I am catching more schoolies than average) this seems like a good idea. I don't think it's a panacea, and really what we need are conservation measures that protect the striper forage base and spawning habitat, but this can't hurt honestly and it's better to put in place measures like this when the population is at "moderate concern" levels and not "verge of extinction" levels"

Good news, Misha! We only needed to go to 6x tippet and size 20 midges. (NB, out of the water for < 30 seconds and swam away strongly thanks to before and after rejuvenating)

Owen, one other note for the Holston, here's a tip for fishing the sulfurs. They sell a lot of CDC comparaduns at the shops down there, and they work really well, just don't forget your silica dust of choice (the brush ones, like Frog's Fanny, work better for working the silica dust into CDC fibers). If you find yourself presenting the fly downstream, definitely let your fly swing after the dead drift presentation is complete. I had one day where the fish were porpoising out of the water for my fly when I did that. Super fun. Ugh another note just came to me. I used a 5' furled leader to get an extra long leader, and it helped. Those fish are spooky in the low water. You'll primarily fish 6x tippet, and may even need 7x flouro at times. Once you figure out the rig, it's stellar.

Fork Holston, the VA Creeper trail and AT in that area should make for a nice little excursion too.

*also there's Whitetop Laurel Creek near there, although that's a freestoner so I have grave doubts about how good the fishing will be in June. But we'd be talking well up in the mountains and it's a pretty large stream so there's an off chance it'll be good maybe? God I want to go back and give it a shot.

If you are willing to drive further, the Upper Holston and Farmington Rivers in CT are pretty awesome.

If you want a variety of fishing on one river, try the Juniata in PA.  From trout in the Little J and the Frankstown Branch, to freshwater stripers in Raystown Lake (formed by Army Corps of Engineers dam on the Juniata), to smallmouth fishing, especially from Lewistown down to the confluence with the Susquehanna.

I will second-third the suggestions for south-central PA, Harrisburg, and the State College area's spring creeks. You could also check out the Shenandoah and upper Potomac, but the other respondents in here seem to have a better handle on the smallies (although I keep getting told that I should fish the James upstream of Lynchburg, never mind that I don't have any good rods for smallies down here). One other option I don't think that has been mentioned for trout is the Savage/North Branch of the Potomac system; they're both tailwaters so should stay good well into the summer (and only ~3 hours from DC!) But yes, a lot will depend on water level. Erie, PA seems like a good option as well for lake smallies based on some articles I read a while back about then, and that may be less sensitive to rainfall (although I don't know jack about lake fishing).

If you have your heart set on trout as an option, you could also do a combined trip-a few days on say the Susquehanna or Shenandoah and some time on spring creeks near where you go.

Plan to be flexible.  Temperature and Water levels are going to drive fishing choices.  There might be good trout fishing in North Central PA or the Catskills if there is a cool spell and some rain (we need rain).  Morning and evening fishing in the South Central PA region should be ok (they are spring fed),  But Smallmouth would be my preference if you want to plan ahead.  Even that is iffy due to potential heavy rain anywhere.  Welcome to fly fishing in the Mid-atlantic region.

New River?  Stay closer to home and upper Potomac?  Or hop on a plane, rent a cheap car (if you can find one) and camp out west.

So am I right to pass up trout fishing and instead put in my kayak in some salt water for stripers, blues, sea trout, etc?  I am looking for suggestions of where to camp/put in if that is the case.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Myrtle Beach DIY Fishing?

I was there for the same reason at the end of June! There are always folks surf fishing on the beach (esp at dusk) and several fishing piers in the area. If you're interested in fly fishing though, I did speak with a couple guides pre-trip and also visited the folks at the Orvis store in MB. They all said the same thing: tough to target saltwater species during summer months. Inlet fishing in the flats is mostly done in the winter when the redfish come in. During the summer, they all chase warmwater species and there are tons of ponds all around MB that are stocked with bass, catfish, and carp.

I only got out to fish by myself briefly once (given the baseball schedule and didn't want to take time away from the kids' activities) and it was at a pond right by the ballpark. Had about 40 minutes and then got drenched by a late day storm walking back to the field. One way we did sneak in some fishing time and scratch the itch was a 1/2 day team outing on a head boat.

Good luck and enjoy it!
