{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} From The Fly Fishing Show

Alameda County Fairgrounds – site of the Pleasanton Fly Fishing Show – has been designated a COVID-19 vaccine distribution center, ending any hope for 2021 while restrictive government attendance mandates forced the cancellation of the Lancaster, Penn. show.
In addition to becoming a vaccine distribution center, emergency medical services will take over all of the Alameda County Fairgrounds' primary buildings and the main paved parking lot with an end date of July 4, it was announced. This ends any hope for a possible spring event, but it's better than an empty facility.
In Pennsylvania, regulations will only permit 463 attendees in the Lancaster Convention Center. The Lancaster Fly Fishing Show attracts far more than that together with exhibitors, show staff and presenters. We had no choice but to cancel for 2021 and look toward 2022.
The Denver Fly Fishing Show is still on track for April 30-May 2. We will continue to monitor the situations, while remaining hopeful we can make a positive turn.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Clear fly lines

I use clear intermediate lines for pond brook trout fishing and believe they make a huge difference.

Many of the better tarpon guys in the keys use clear lines.  i personally can't say I've seen a big difference there but if those guys think it does it probably does.

Awesome, thank you.  Yeah, I'd love to be able to sit adjacent to a grass or weed line, cast 30' and strip it back along the edge without spooking every fish between me and where my fly lands.  Basically, do what braided line does.  Some fish don't spook, but i find most do.  My big nasty is getting old, so may try to switch things up.

The fugly frog pattern I tie is pretty damn near 100% weedless.  I can throw it deep in the spatterdock or weeds and it doesn't snag.  The only problem is the fly line is heavy and will spook some fish as it bends the spatterdock as I strip it back through.  I throw some dahlberg divers with a mono weed guard too, but those don't really work terribly well.

I tie it on gallups belly bumper hooks which also work great as weedless streamer hooks.  I bought a pack of the new Ahrex hook with the deeper, more traditional texas hook profile to try as well.  The deeper bend will keel the fly better, but may mess with hookup rates on topwater.  Don't know.

Anyway, if we ever get through covid and get back to beer ties, I'll bring you a fugly frog to try out.

Hi Gregg,

I've actually only landed two snakeheads to date and both were using the Monic line. Neither of these fish were sight casted, and I did spook every snakehead that was sight casted—so it's not exactly a ringing endorsement of the line's stealth factor.

For casting deer hair bugs, the Monic line works fine but won't match the big nasty or other bass lines. My second and larger snakehead came on a large deer hair bug, kind of seen in the picture below—you also see remnants of the clear line. The first snakehead I caught was on a heavy lead-eyed purple and black streamer, you might notice the fish wasn't actually hooked, he just didn't let go of the fly until after landed. When I set him down on the SUP to grab my pliers, he just opened his mouth and flipped off.

The bigger challenge for snakehead fishing on the fly is to find a way to replicate the super weedless frogs that conventional guys can throw deep into lily pads without regard, which is also facilitated by the small diameter of braided line. I don't know that any fly or fly line can do this task as effectively as spin gear.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Bayse, VA/Bryce Resort

Thanks for all the great ideas and information.  I'll probably be back up in the next 2-4 weeks.  Definitely plan on spending some time at Murray's Fly Shop next time.  Stony Creek seems like the most convenient/close water, followed by Passage.  I did notice a small pond by the base of the slopes that was fly fishing only the last time we were there.  I told my wife (who is the the real fly rodder in our family; she started when she was 8) about some of what I have discovered so far.  She most likely will outfish me (as usual) when we get back.  I have some hip waders; what's your opinion on whether I need to get some chest waders for fishing the area?

When do you plan to fish in (or near) Shenandoah county? During the winter/early spring months, your best bet will be stocker streams -  Stony Creek or Passage. It's stocked fishing at it's finest and you'll see the many access points with pull offs on the side of the road. Both were recently stocked, however the water's low and the put and take crowd gets there quickly but with some effort/exploration you can find fish. With precipitation moving in over the next few days this may allow what's left of the recent stockers to move around some. Fall fish, blue gill and an elusive smallie have been caught in both streams too.

I think your best bet would be to use your proximity to the South River in Waynesboro or Mossy Creek outside of Harrisonburg and focus in that general area (lots of options). The winter trout fishing gets exponentially better around those two cities. Harry Murray is a good resource, Mossy Creek fly shop in Harrisonburg and South River Fly Shop in Waynesboro are both fantastic operations owned by good people.

The upper reaches of the North Fork Shenandoah are stocked this time of year as well, and their tributaries. They do not stock the North Fork Shenandoah in Shenandoah County (I wish they would...) that part of the river is a warm water fishery that has unfortunately been severely negatively impacted from the high water events of a few years ago. I'm hoping it will rebound, only time will tell. Exciting to hear about the muskie sighting!

Feel free to reach out directly with questions, my folks retired out there so I spend a good amount of time fishing all over the valley. Also, stop into the Woodstock café both for supplies (fantastic retail wine/beer options) and amazing breakfast/lunch and weekend dinner (or safe carryout option). Chef Jose is absolutely crushing it - truly a valley treasure (not affiliated just a huge fan of them).

Stoney. You can run it the whole way down to Edinburg. There's some nice pools and with no foliage you can run the banks pretty well.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Ballistic Pro Fly Lines

Thanks for this, Carl!

I went with the Ballistic Pro Performance in the 6 wt to match my rod. They filled the order and got it in the mail in a couple of hours!

Similar lines:

Ballistic Pro Performance
Bario GT125 or GT90 (out of stock)
Scientific Anglers Mastery Expert Distance (competition model comes in orange)
Rio Technical Trout
Wulf Long Belly line

All of these lines have a longer head.  The reason we were talking about the Balistic is the color.  It is much easier to see (SA also is nice and bright and the Bario is almost as good).

I rough shaped them with a Dremel
Then i put it in the drill.... and smoothed the shape out with sandpaper
made the slit with a razor blade (i heated the razor blade with a lighter, not really sure why)

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Ballistic Pro Fly Lines

Phil-
Dalton is correct. You can use up to a 7wt for the CI test. While you can accomplish the CI with a lighter weight rod/line, make it easy on yourself and use a 7wt. They want you to show smooth, relaxed demonstation casts with nice loops, not your typical fishing casts. On a windy day, it will be easier with a 7wt.

I saw some folks use chartreuse flylines for the test and it worked fine. However, I believe the orange line is easier to see for the folks giving the test, even in bright sun. If they can't see your line during a cast, they will ask you to do it again. Just make it easier for everyone and use an orange line.

The ballistic line has a long head with the rear taper ending at 55'. It is a good line that is especially nice for the roll casting, hauling and distance casting parts of the test. Regan also used that line when he took his test. He was the one who recommended the line to me.

As I mentioned earlier, I will bring both the 6wt and 7wt orange ballistic lines to the next casting church, in case you want to try them out.

It's dictated that you use a maximum line of a 7 wt (probably further defined by AFFTA standards elsewhere)--but I suppose you could use a 6 wt or whatever rod you want. Most people would find that that the 7 wt line matched to a 7 wt rod is the easiest to way to hit the distance targets, and the extra mass can help overcome wind if that's a issue.

I think I used an orange Scientific Anglers 7wt line for my test, but this new Ballistic line looks quite good in theory as an all around or instruction line. The longer belly is good for carrying loops farther and mending while casting if you get into this. I don't think the testers would like my clear line. ;)
