For those who haven't used them before, no matter how heavy the polyleader is, it's never really a substitute for a full sink line. Since then I have been in search of beginner friendly spots (within 30-45 minutes of DC) with the best success being around Savage Mill where the Little/Middle Patuxent meet. I am not sure where exactly they do it, but both of those streams are listed as recently stocked by MD. Water levels are relatively low and it is still bearable for wet wading. Even considering that I am probably scaring most of the fish with sloppy casts and poor fly choices I have been able to get brown trout and fall fish on dry flies. The trout have been breaking the surface all week, especially near the fast flowing sections (though I can't figure out what they're eating). This is still a good spot for other beginners, though it is very pressured by folks with spinning rods.

This weekend I am free to drive further from DC out in the general direction of Silver Spring - any recommendations are welcome.

May I suggest Kurt Moser at the Conservancy to coordinate cleanup activity. He'll be able to help with disposing of whatever is picked up.

Thanks for sharing, I will try to join the upcoming 4MR Conservatory clean up on Oct 25. But I am still interested in helping any other (walking) clean up efforts in 4MR (as the 4MR Conservatory does their clean up on kayaks). Best, Rodrigo

I would be interested in fishing the severn this weekend if anyone is going (oct 17 or 18).  I have not fished severne before.  I have fished Goodhands creek and had luck off points on moving tides and caught a couple at dusk in back of creek on top water.  Looks like high tide is around 6am/7pm .

Any tips for success? I have had success putting a 7ips sinking leader on my floating line. It is easy to cast and to mend in the water while letting me drop a fly deep.

I use their 7 ips leader and their 2 ips leader when I swing flies in deep water. I found it helps to cast 2 heavy clousers. It is also convenient for steamers with no weight or when you want to switch leaders and still be able to throw a popper out.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Southern Maryland Fly Fishing Spots?

Hmm bank fishing for four around southern MD is kind of a tall order... unless you're standing on a spillway dam there's not much in the way of solid ground due to the area's geology. Some well known spots around you are Allen's Fresh and Mattawoman Creek for the winter yellow perch run. One suggestion I have for you though is St. Mary's lake. It's nice, you should definitely check that out sometime. On google maps it says it's temporarily closed though? Not sure what that's about. Maybe just the park facilities are closed, but you can still access the lake.

St. Charles Lake in Waldorf is decent and very accessible. I've caught some nice bass there and in the long pond next to it. It has produced largemouths, bluegill, crappie, warmouth, and even a random pickerel from time to time.

Hey I went Kayaking Around the Gravelly area from 0600 to 1PM.

My catch for the day was 6 striper around 14-16" and 3 nice blue catfish 5-7 lbs (I kept all 3).

My method was to troll on both my rods. There not much use to casting a fly rod traditionally because you need to hit a depth and it is exhausting to do it from kayak. I found the bridges and the mouth of gravely point to be the most productive. I wish I went to the washington channel, but the waves had become annoying to paddle against in the afternoon.

Hi Wes.  I have been recently trying Kayak fishing from Gravelly too... did you have any luck?   My strategy thus far has just been trying fishing any structure/overhanging trees near the banks with small Clousers.  I get some here & there but didn't have too much success this summer.

There is a small craft advisory so I will not be launching into the Severn unfortunately. I'll stay in the DC area and launch from Gravelly.

Hey I definitely would like to go fishing on OCT 17 or 18. I have been successful wading around Fletcher's cove, but that is a really slippery area so if you are not sure of foot I would not recommend it

Hey Wesley,

I will be out of town this weekend but would definitely be interested in getting together at some point to go fishing. I do not own a kayak, but live in the area and fairly new to fly fishing. Let me know if you ever want to get together.

Hello All,

I was wondering is anyone was open to kayak fish the Severn River this saturday 10/10. I mostly lurk on here for info. I'll have an 8 wt rod and fish 2 clousers but I also plan to spin fish with a swimming jig. I kayak in an Oru Beach LT kayak, and so far it has worked wonderfully.

Any tips for success? I have had success putting a 7ips sinking leader on my floating line. It is easy to cast and to mend in the water while letting me drop a fly deep.

A little bit about myself, I moved to DC 2 years ago after college. I work as a wastewater engineer and as a guardsmen in the PA guard

Thanks!

Wes
