{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: March Casting Church - a change

It's rarely enforced. I've never heard of anyone having issues wading around Fletcher's. You shouldn't be going above your knees regardless.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: March Casting Church - a change

Reagan, I did not know it was illegal to wade, is this only for the shad run, can we still practice casting in the water as long as we do not have a hook tied on? Can we walk in the water to get to rocks to cast from?

Our March casting meeting will be on Sunday the 15th of March, not the usual expected 8th (the 2nd Sun of the month).

We will meet at the usual time, 8am, at Fletcher's, but at the boathouse this time.
As shad season will be almost started, and like we did last year, we are going to focus the church on casting and fishing for shad in the Potomac from the Maryland side.

We will discuss lines and rods and how to cast them. We will discuss flies and rigging. We we will discuss presentations. We will walk upstream from the boathouse and explore where you can cast from the bank to fish for shad. We will fish for shad, there might be a few there at that time.

Note that this is not a guided trip, just individuals sharing their knowledge and experience.

You will need a DC license.  Bring your fishing gear. The shad run a little deep, so sink tips (10ft or so, fast sinking) or sinking lines are very helpful. A 6wt to 8wt rod can cast the heavier sinking lines. The instructors will have gear.

Expect mud and water to step thru, so waders and boots are helpful but not required. It is illegal to fully wade.

This change, just for March, is due to many of the instructors attending an FFI continuing education event during the Lancaster Fly Fishing show that weekend of 7th and 8th.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Key West | DIY Baby Tarpon & Peacock Bass

I go down to Key Largo to dive, and wade fished when they called off dive days due to swell or I needed a day to offgas from tech diving. I got so frustrated watching fish run away from me that I bought a gheenoe and trailer for $500 in WV gutted it and rebuilt it as a poling skiff with a $500 15hp I rebuilt and remote controlled trolling motor I got as a demo from west marine. Tarpon, especially baby tarpon, are super skittish, I had more luck with the occasional snook, I haven't been back down but based on my experiences on pangas in Mexico and Belize I think I have 100x more chance to get at tarpon with the boat.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Alternatives to the Boundary Waters?

TBH I never found the fishing in BW to be better than anywhere else, but it is pretty easy to get to, and get out and away from people.

If you get wayyyy back in the everglades it'll feel remote but can be tricky to find a pad to sleep on, but close to the salt is where the more interesting fish are, and of course where more people are.

Lots of places in Maine line BW, Ontario, and Nova Scotia are like BW, basically the northern Canadian shield will be near identical and offer similar fishing.

You could also head to Bob Marshall for some bucket list fishing but that may be more rafting and more trouty, and too far away

Are you specifically looking to stay in the US? does it need to be canoeing? do you need to be able to drive to get there? Lots of great backpacking routes in BC that'd put you on steelhead and salmon water, and inland in the mountains there is great trout fishing.

Haha!

So I think I have now made 6 or 7 trips to the glades. And that 2011 trip ranks absolutely last for number of fish caught, and ranks number one...by far...for most hilarious stories and fun!

Brilliant!

If you do a parachute Mr Rapidan one night I may have to abandon my table. Wife planning our summer trip to Colorado today and that's the fly I'm going to need.

We'll have two LED lamps from now at beer tie so it'll be much brighter.

Here are some darts I've been playing with.

For March, I figure there's only one option: shad darts

My recipe for shadness madness (heyo Remick!) is as follows:

Hook - Size 6 - short shank, wide gap is preferable. Like a bonefish hook. I really really like a saltwater hook because they're so strong, but some people might look down their nose at this because it gets expensive. Last year I lost several large, large fish because the hook bent though, so I'm sticking to my guns on this.
Eyes - I tie two different weights, one bead chain and one heavier, so the heavier one will be the lead fly and the lighter one will be on the point.
Body - chenille or anything similar in different colors - if it ain't chartreuse it ain't no use!! (red, pink, orange, whatever else you feel like, would all work - I pretty much only use red and chartreuse).
Tail - I only put white calf tail on my shad darts.

Or, you can always fish a Snowhite Damsel. They slay shad, and bonefish too, as Thomas can attest.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Key West | DIY Baby Tarpon & Peacock Bass

Rob, The family and I spent a couple weeks on Big Pine Key in 2016 and we kept going back to the Square Grouper bar and grill on Cudjoe Key for eats. No Name Pub on Big Pine is kinda of cool place to visit too although I didn't think the Pizza was as good as advertised (its the bar with the dollar bills pasted all over the walls). The key deer will show up around that bar on occasion. I took my boat along on that trip so that really helped me get around down there, but I'll send you an email of a spot you may be able to access on foot especially after the hurricane went through there a couple years ago and looks to have cleared some real estate. {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Key West | DIY Baby Tarpon & Peacock Bass

That's going to be a tough goal, especially without a boat.  I have a friend that caught one wading near the vaca cut. The restaurant with light thing is probably not a good idea.  There are a number of restaurants that have tarpon around them, mainly because they feed them.  It would not be a good look if you showed up with a flyrod trying to catch them.

As far as restaurants, Lorelei in islamorada is a classic place at least for a drink as a lot of guides hang out there.  I like the island fish company in marathon for seafood.  The sunset grill at the end of the 7 mile bridge is a good place to have a drink and watch the sunset.  I've only had oysters and stone crab claws there so can't vouch for food much beyond that but they were good.  Another great and classic keys stop is the no name pub in big pine.  Tons of character there.

Don't eat at the restaurant near world wide sports.  Its good for a drink but the food is not good.

Sandy Morets flyshop is just down the road from world wide and is a great shop.  They may be able to recommend some fishing sports.  if they send you to mile mark 76 flat don't waste your time.

If you are interested in fish other than tarpon i can add a few more wade friendly spots that you can catch fish like snapper or cudas.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Alternatives to the Boundary Waters?

John,

I would highly recommend Isle Royal National park in Michigan for remoteness. May might be a bit early for good fishing though, we visited the park in August and did ok in the inland lakes. Another option you may want to consider is Everglades National Park in FL. It will be way warmer and you will have a lot less portaging. Although camping on the chickees seems very front country I can assure you, once you are off and on the water you will feel like you are in the middle of know where.

Let us know what you end up doing and give us a report!

How about the Allagash wilderness in Maine.  I don't know much about it, but our scout trip did a canoe trek there.

So...I am learning the hard way but let me suggests the cheats:

1. Make it fun fun fun time, which means playground time, ice cream, etc. This is an investment in who could be the greatest fishing partner in the future
2. Watch the temp, I froze my son on 4 mile on a sunny but cold day in January. He never wanted to go back despite having a nice cast.
3. Having everything rigged up and ready to go, kids are bursting with excitement and nothing is more painful for them is watching you tie blood knots.
4. Anytime outdoors for the next gen is a win!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Maryland Striper (Rockfish) regs

Sadly, Maryland's new regulations are intended to skirt the real issues and they go against the good intentions of the ASFMC. Maryland came under fire for their conservation equivalency proposals from the board and almost every other state that is on the commission during the February 4th meeting. I was in attendance virtually if anyone has questions on specifics. It was not pretty. Based on the new regulations, and continuing an unsavory history, Maryland will continue to be the problem when it comes to saving the striped bass populations along the east coast. New Jersey isn't much better.

Please do your part to safely release your striped bass and limit your targeting to safe temperatures and salinity. You can also educate others who may be misled or mistaken to think that the Maryland regulations are putting the striped bass population rebuild at the forefront.

Here is a good summary of how Maryland is using conservation equivalency to go against the good intentions of the ASFMC.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} March Casting Church - a change

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} OPST Commando Heads

I have used those heads with Lazer running line to fish for shad and smallmouth bass my 6wt and 8wt single hand rods using single hand spey casts.
All good fun. The heads are capable of lifting pretty heavy sink tips in the 5-7ft length, need that for shad fishing.

Yep, mending Lazer line does not work well. You can use a fully integrated line and mend better or just have normal running line but with a head system, take the penalty for not being able to cast as far. Other options: Wulff Ambush Triangle Taper line, or just really over line your rod. Like use an 8 or 9 or 10wt weight forward or double taper line on your 6wt, just for single-hand spey casting. Lot of fun there too.

Come out to the next casting church (15 Mar), we can work some single-hand spey stuff.

From what I've read, people say they cast well but are no good mending. Also unclear if you can switch between casting styles. Would love any thoughts.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Sanibel Island mid-February

Miles, great looking fly!

On my last visit to FL, in a different area, I caught a few little snook on a Murdich minnow.

Jason, clousers will get the mangrove snappers although they do have a tendency to short strike. They like to hang out under the more complex mangrove root systems along channel edges. Especially on the downcurrent side where it's a little calmer. The best chance of hooking one is if you find a school, they will compete with each other for the fly. When solo they just nip at the tail. Sheepshead aren't as aggressive toward flies but occasionally one will slip up.

If you do go to the Wildlife Drive culverts, the current flushing through on a moving tide is pretty strong (think Gravelly Point) - even a clouser will be in the top foot of the water column. Don't ignore right up against the culvert walls because that's where the snook will be trying to pin baitfish. My PB snook came on a 10 foot cast to the wall I was standing on. Ladyfish hang out farther out in the open near the edge of casting range - a good way to reach them is just to let the current take the fly to them, and then strip back as fast as you can.

On Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at 7:50:01 PM UTC-5, Miles wrote:
Clousers are a great fly for a lot of species in Florida, but most snook flies sit closer to the top of the water column. Fluffy marabou flies or zonker strips tend to be popular.

I tie a fly that's sort of a Razorback crossed with a Double Bunny (call it the Doubleback). It has worked pretty well for me on both coasts of Florida. I've caught several snook on it. It would be my first choice for a surf or mangrove fly for snook. I sketched out the pattern if you want to tie some up. There's a special glue you need to bond the zonker strips to each other a la Double Bunny, but it's not really necessary if you're using a fairly short strip on this fly. I tried to cheap out on my first batch and used super glue, and it didn't hold long, but I still caught fish with the two zonkers separated.

Good luck!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Sanibel Island mid-February

Go for a single hand rod between 7-10wt. If you do find snook on the beach, they will mostly be within 10 ft from dry sand—they get stupid close to the beach. Farther out in the surf you are likely to tangle with small, miscellaneous fish, occasional trout and jacks, but mostly ladyfish and blue runners. Whether in a boat or on shore, short accurate casts are going to catch way more snook than slinging 100 ft of line.

Thanks all! Do you think a 7/8 is too much? It is a two handed overhead rod that I use for the CA surf.

For snook definitely don't use anything less than 25lb! Lost a really nice snook very quickly on 20lb.  A really simple fly is 239 Flies take on the EP A2Z fly. It is just two brushes and set of eyes. I've had good luck on white body and red head. (This was on the Atlantic coast)

I second Andrew's recommendation of Tarpon Bay. Pray for very light SW winds and warm temperatures. Try to rent a canoe if they let you, but they will try to push you to a kayak. If the wind is up, go straight into Commodore Creek but with light winds stay in the bay and focus on the mangrove shorelines. With higher tides, stay about 30-40 feet from the trees and drop casts as close to the mangroves as you can. With lower tides, stay a little farther back and look for cruising or sunning fish, but also blind to the water in front of the mangroves and focus heavily on creek mouths.

For flies, I like various Enrico Puglisi baitfish patterns in size 4-6. Make sure you bring a spool or 30 lb Flouro as shock tippet, I use 30" connected to a 15lb leader/tippet. Snook have bass teeth on steroids that will immediately chafe through anything smaller than 20 lb, and 30 lb is the safest bet. Check your leader after after fish and you'll probably need to cut the shock back a few inches and retie; once the shock gets shorter than 18", tie on a new shock.

Good luck!
