{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Belize for Christmas

Awesome, thanks a lot John. Very helpful. Real excited as well, first time on any kind of flats and look forward to the great environment. Only other question I have would be about wading boots when walking down the stretch of secret beach. I have some slip on water shoes with a pretty solid bottom to it but the topside is mostly a mesh like material. Would I be fine with these or opt for the more protective boot style shoe given coral and what not. Also thanks again, really helpful information leading up to the trip.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Belize for Christmas

Hey Dylan,

I just was down there last winter for New Years, you're in for a phenomenal trip. I also brought all my gear and had no problems with TSA. I would however recommend bringing a lockable suitcase, a couple other folks in my group had a problem with one of the local airlines rummaging through their bags and taking some stuff.

Here are my recommendations as far as fishing goes:

That time of year tends to have a pretty strong East wind, so all of the flats on the ocean side of the Caye probably won't be fishable. I strongly recommend renting a quality golf cart in San Pedro with big tires and good suspension, it'll be able to get you where you need to go.

I found some good flats by heading north from San Pedro and west to Secret Beach. It's the only major road that heads west off the main road, you can't miss it. It's about 5 miles from SP and my recollection is it's about a 45 minute golf cart ride. The roads are pretty bumpy so it can be slow going at times.

At secret beach, head south and work the flats. Even with a strong wind they'll stay fairly fishable, because they're protected by Ambergris Caye. I'd recommend starting at Blue Bayou and heading as far south as you can. If you can spend the whole day, I'd head south all the way to the third major cove where you'll see some buildings under construction. That was the best fishing I had on foot, but it is quite a hike.

Feel free to shoot me a DM if you want more info, it's great to hear you're going down there. I can't wait to get back.

John

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Belize for Christmas

Heading down to Belize over the Christmas break period through the new year, staying in ambergris Caye, first two days i have guided trips set up but would like to go on my own the rest of the trip, and recommendations on how to do so, whether it be paddle board or wading? Also, I'm bringing everything through tsa including my fly tying box, will I encounter any problems?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Bahamas- Long Island

Finally got around to planning our honeymoon and we are going to the Bahamas for a week around Presidents day. Has anyone ever fished Long Island?

Seems to be pretty fishy and not to pressured based off what I can find on the internet. I will probably hire a guide for a half day or full day but hope to do get into some DIY action as well.

If any one has fly recommendations or locations to try that would be great. Staying at the northern end, but will be exploring the island too.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: South Cocoa Beach in December?

Have fished Cocoa a bunch.  I used:

Captain
 Tim Sheridan
321-848-2662

More of a bait guy but has feel for where the fish are.

for DIY suggest fishing:
https://goo.gl/maps/PJnjnfUx8pTzgDUe9
and
https://goo.gl/maps/6qqSJ1kR8rGSxrqs6

You can also rent a kayak and put in:
https://g.page/WildsideTours?share

or go up to the NMZ.

I left a homemade stripping basket at the first place, a bait shop.  They owner is cool and will let you fish around his place.

Best restaurant in the area is the Fat Snook.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: South Cocoa Beach in December?

I am sure you will find some fish off the beach, white clousers and deceivers from size 2-2/0 should do the trick. At least that's what works for me around Christmas time in Stuart, FL. Walk the beach and look for any structure you see, or birds working, or fish in the surf. Or just blind cast and you may get lucky.

If you can rent a kayak, go explore the rivers a bit, should be some fun and interesting fish back there too.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Volunteering for DGIF trout stocking program

Two weeks ago I participated in the stocking of Accotink and Holmes in Fairfax County.  We were a small group that volunteered for the event and it only took a few hours out of a weekday morning to contribute.  It was also a blast.

I cover the experience in a new post on my lifestyle blog at https://www.therockettman.com/post/stocking-up

If interested in a future stocking (I think there will be another in January) contact George Paine at NVATU (https://www.novatu.org/boardofdirectors).

Whether your a very experienced caster looking to take your casting to the next level , or its your first time out, we've got room for you.  We meet at Fletcher's Boat House in D.C at the back of the lower parking lot.

Any instructors out there who would be willing to help are most welcome! Beginners are also always welcome. Don't worry If you don't have a rod I always  have  a few extra!

In addition to our single hand instructors, Regan B. will be there teaching all things Spey!

We will be definitely continue utilizing this as a guideline, probably with some modifications.

We focused on the first few tasks, (primarily focusing on the dominant hand side) and then set up a course of 20', 30' and 40' targets and did accuracy casts and some distance casts.

Hey everyone,

Were hosting our November Beer Tie tomorrow 11/11 at Whitlow's Bar on Wilson Blvd in Arlington.
Well be at the back bar starting at 6pm. Half price burgers and beer specials!

We decided to make this an open tie month because Rob Snowhite is on a fishing trip in NY.

Bring your vise and share some ideas, or just stop by for some fishy conversation over a pint.

Tickets are $20 pre-sale or $25 at the door. Hope to see you there. Tickets can be purchased here: https://www.showclix.com/event/if42019washingtondc

I applied for the Hatch Magazine scholarship to the school back in the spring and while I didn't win it, I was ultimately awarded a scholarship by Trout Unlimited to attend.

I'd never been to Idaho and never fished the Henry's Fork. I'd been told that it in many parts fishes like a giant spring creek. Lots of vegetation, slow glassy water and skittish fish. I'd say that that description was mostly spot-on with the Box Canyon section a notable exception.

I arrived at TroutHunter on a brisk but not terrible 45 degree day. Great food and beer was consumed that night. The next day was good weather as well (more below) but then the temperatures dropped into the single digits and hung there for the next few days. School of Trout is sort of an unusual format for a fishing trip as it's really more of like a fly-fishing tutorial on steroids. We had class each day in the morning, a casting session, another class in the afternoon and fishing afterwards.

The first day we stuck to that set-up pretty much, with talks from Hilary Hutcheson on fly fishing equipment and John Juracek on casting. With a few hours of sunlight remaining we headed up to the Box Canyon section for some fishing, joined by Tom Rosenbauer who walked the beginners through reading water, fly selection, etc. The class was told to fish dry droppers. I took one look at the fast broken water and decided to go with a tightline nymphing rig instead. 20-30 minutes of getting my depths/drifts dialed in and I was suddenly on several fish in a row, including one very nice 16 inch colored-up rainbow. Needless to say, I thought I was going to put on a clinic. This did not happen. One very spastic whitefish later and my tightline rig was a bird's nest and with only a few minutes of fishing left, my day was done.

Like I mentioned, a strong cold front sweeped through Idaho/Montana that night, with temperatures sticking to a narrow range in the single digit-teens. The instructors made the easy call and fishing was off for the next few days. Instead we were treated to a deluge of knowledge from some of the world's most celebrate anglers. Tom Rosenbauer, John Juracek, Kirk Deeter, Craig Mathews, Tim Romano, Jeff Currier, Hilary Hutcheson and others provided us with an incredible depth of information on fishing. Of particular note were Tom Rosenbauer's talk on bugs and fly selection; Jeff Currier's talks on streamer tactics as well as tightline nymphing (Jeff is the most accomplished competition angler in US history); and Tim Romano's talk on fly fishing photography.

If you feel so disposed, I'd encourage you to take a gander at my article in Hatch Magazine.

Also, if you have any interest in School of Trout, or the scholarship program, please feel free to give me a shout.

Banana Fish, feel sorry for the blighters. I dream of one day living in a world devoid of hatchery fish. In the meantime, Palomino's serve as good "indicator" fish.
