Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Don’t ‘High Line’ Georgetown’s C&O Canal

Milton Friedman once said, "if you put government in charge of a desert there would be a shortage of sand."  I guess the corrollary to that is that if you put government in charge of a canal, there will be a shortage of water.

It was pretty much ghost last time I fished Chain Bridge area about a week ago, though I will say there were two guys hand lining w bait off the edge of the faster current and they were pulling up one catfish after another.  Note to self - sink tip.  I will take anything at this point...

Nothing at Burke in the past week, but I killed it out there one night a couple weeks ago.  Bass topwater...

Congress needs to appropriate the funds and NPS really should do something about the remainder of the canal, esp. Fletchers, FIRST. Just my opinion.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Northern Neck Fishing

Morning everyone, while I do like keeping spots close to the chest, this one is too good not to share with this small community.
Been making runs down to Ingram Bay with the skiff and have been on a consistent trout bite when the tide and wind are cooperating. To fish the way I am going to describe, you need a good flow of tide, with incoming or outgoing, that hasn't seemed to matter much, just that there is good tidal flow.
I set up off the point, specifically Dameron Marsh point, about 200 yards or so. There is a large sand flat that runs out, 2-4ft depth, with grass mixed in up to a transition point. YOU NEED TO FIND THE TRANSITION OF GRASS TO NO GRASS, THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THIS. Once you find the transition from sand/grass to all sand, start to fish it.

How to find a spot to fish; I find it easiest for explanation and for new comers to go ahead and anchor up after you find the transition. Anchor up about 30 yards inside(over) the grass, to allow you to cast over to the areas where there is no grass, since that it where the fish have been. I start by working the face of a clock, hit everything in your reach that looks fishy. But most big fish, over 22", have come from casting towards the bay, out into deeper water, and working it back over the sand flat. Too often I see people working tight to the shoreline like you would redfish back in the NC marshes. I haven't seen that produce in this area. If you are not getting any thumps, I would move out into the bay more. Again, I have not seen the large fish tight to the shoreline, they are a few hundred feet off.

How to fish your spot; While I would rather fish the long rod exclusively, I use plastics for speed, presentation style, and to find the profile for that day. I start with a 4" paddle tail(Backwater Candy Electric Chicken has been the ticket lately on a 1/4 or 3/8oz jig head). You cast out, let it sink, and hop it, swim it, jig it, let it sit, make it erratic. Sometimes a slow retrieve gets it done, just play with it until you start to feel the thumps. Once you feel thumps, I would work the spin rod until I caught a few, then swap over to a sink tip 8wt with a bright clouser and use the same techniques for retrieval that I dialed in with the spin gear. If I find one fish chewing, I know the window is open. But the window is typically twice a tide cycle and only a few hours, been fishing the morning cycle due to the water temps.

Water temps that have been working. 75-77 degrees. That has all been before noon.

If you have a trolling motor and are a more advanced angler, I would hunt and pick towards a group of pilings a few hundred feet off the marsh, they have also been producing. Over this sand flat, there has been huge schools of bait getting blown up by birds and fish, and working the schools is a sure fire way to connect. If you wanted to catch bait and use them to fire schools up after the bait has left the area, that is another trick to turning the fish back on.

I make the run from Dale City at 0330, get to the ramp(Cooper Landing) around 0530-0600, make it to the spot by 630 to catch the am bite. Earlier the better for water temps and car traffic. Don't really see many boats fishing the skinny water, but I suspect that the area is just not a tourist area which is A-OKAY with me, another good reason to hit that spot. There is actually a tarpon video on YouTube that was shot right on that marsh, so I suspect that later in the summer is when my targeted species will change from trout to the poon.

I am happy to help out with any questions about what has been workin for me.

Tight lines boys and girls!

Could be water level? Little Falls gauge is at 3.5. I haven't waded the Potomac since 2017 at this point. I normally get in when it's around 2.5, but I've never had that much luck on the main river. It's beautiful but frustrating. I feel like I spend most of my time trying not to float away, even when the water is low. I've been focusing on the tribs where it's easier to cover more water. I like to hit an appealing location with a few casts and generally I get something right away or nothing, then I move on. I'm not hauling in smallies hand over fist, but I've gotten a few so far this summer.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: New Jersey versus Montaulk for Fall Albies/Bass

Peter,

Have you looked into Island Beach State Park in New Jersey?

I've fished out of Montaulk in late September/early October for the last couple of years, false albacore one amazing fish on a fly rod..  Its really good, but the trip is really long (5 hours to NYC, and it seems like another 5 hours out to Montaulk).

Does anyone have recommendations for an area and guide along the Jersey Shore (or even Delaware) that would be as good and more accessible time wise?  (Fly fishing guide for 2).

Thanks for any pointers - Pete

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Recommendations for Munich, Germany ?

Hi Other Lane!

Thank you for this info. My own research has corroborated your findings, though perhaps it isn't QUITE so difficult to obtain the license anymore. Still, a written test is required.

I've found several all inclusive fishing lodge style opportunities I'm going to look into. The Baurup in Mittersill Austria looks particularly good.

Will update with info as I get it!

On Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at 4:45:30 PM UTC-4, Lane Thurgood wrote:
Lane, I lived in Germany in the mid- to late-90s and it was VERY hard to get 1) a license, and 2) permission/access to fish.  We have a wealth of public water here.  Not so there.  I gave up.  You had to pass a written test for a license.  I remember taking the practice test and question #1 was how many eggs a 6-pound pike could lay.  I had no idea and a quick scan of the other questions revealed my inability to pass without serious study.  I gave up.  I'm not kidding.  I can't say how things have changed since 1998.

A quick internet search revealed this, though I can't vouch for its accuracy:

"Generally, in order to legally catch a fish in Germany you need two important documents: a "Fischereischein," or fishing license, and a "Tageskarte," or permit. The fishing license confirms that you attended and passed a special course and exam. The license allows you to obtain a permit for fishing a specified body of water for a specified period of time.

Obtaining a German fishing license is time consuming and pricey. Its process entails taking a 30-hour course followed by a comprehensive fishing exam that tests what students learned. A good understanding of the German language is a must. The cost of obtaining the license is around $200. The license needs to be renewed annually for about $22.  https://www.kaiserslauternamerican.com/fishing-in-germany-within-anglers-reach-2/

Also, I can't say whether it's still the case, but catch and release was illegal, considered cruel to the fish.  Again, a quick internet search found this:  https://www.outsideonline.com/2160036/its-illegal-catch-and-release-germany

So--I enjoyed watching browns and grayling feed in the streams. But I did not fish in the three years I lived there except on leave back in the States.

Hi All!

From what I've read, there is excellent pike and trout fishing and I would love to get a line wet while we're there. I have a musky rig which should be good for the pike but my trout gear leaves something to be desired.

Would love to hear from anyone who has fished Germany/Austria.

I've been out a couple of times with very little luck -- one small SMB, one small sunfish. I'm hoping maybe lower water level will help, but have no real idea what's going on.

I ususally see these things move together -- rains wash mud into the river and also raise the overall level. But not this time.

Any ideas?

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fly fishing spots and tactics on Potomac this week

I took a canoe down the Shenandoah yesterday. We caught three bass a carpet and a bluegill. None over 12 inches, and all on a spinner setup. It was trying my heart out on the fly rod with top water and streamers. No joy. But, agree it was an amazing day on the water. We went to Downriver canoe co. They shuttle you up, give you an anchor and 7.5 miles and 3-5 hours later you work your way down and drop off your stuff.

Easy way to get on the water.

I recommend it.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fly fishing spots and tactics on Potomac this week

My brother will be in from Vermont this week and want to try our luck on local waters. What spots, fish types to target, and tactics do you recommend for fly fishing on the Potomac right now?

Wade or boat (if so what boat type?)

Also, anyone know goose creek out near Auburn/Leesburg Virginia on route 7? Pass it every day and wonder if it holds any fish.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: He asked the FBI to analyze Bigfoot hair 40 years ago...

I heard PA is the third best state to find bigfoot, behind Washington and California. I'm not sure how you can rank best places to find something that's never been found, but that's the word on the street.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Northern Snakeheads Caught in Conowingo Dam Fish Lift

Overall, the only instance where i have heard overwhelming complaints about negative impact on an ecosystem in in Blackwater refuge.  I don't know why, but anglers there say bass numbers have decreased as well as frogs.  I guess frogging is pretty big out there...

Elsewhere, it is generally accepted that they have little to no impact. Im sure they eat juvenile bass, but there are plenty of snake fry for bass to feed on as well (probably better guarded though).  it also may be that they tend to hang out in areas where our other gamefish don't hang out regularly.

I have enjoyed fishing for them recently, so I may be biased, but I like having them around.  Not advocating for further spread, although it is inevitable.  I would however advocate for a limit, especially with bow fishing.  My god, those guys clean out a creek.

Invasive Species Stopped at Dam But Spiked in Numbers

Photo of Conowingo DamA partnership overseeing fish passage at Conowingo Dam reports that 81 northern snakeheads were caught in the dam's fish lift this spring, a dramatic increase after only one snakehead was found there the past two years. While all known snakeheads were stopped and dispatched before reaching the dam's reservoir, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and its partners warn of a possible northern expansion by the aggressively invasive species into the Susquehanna River.

Two fish lifts were installed on the east and west sides of the Conowingo Dam decades ago to allow passage of migratory fish such as American shad and river herring. The fish lifts are critical for migratory species restoration and a requirement by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

These fish lifts operate during the spring migration, which is also when snakeheads are known to travel longer distances in the watershed. All snakeheads captured this year were in the western side of the dam.

In 2017, one snakehead was observed passing from the lower Susquehanna River and upstream to Conowingo Pond through the east fish lift. An agreement was established in 2018 between the Conowingo Dam's owner, Exelon, and the Susquehanna River Anadromous Fish Restoration Cooperative (SRAFRC) to implement voluntary, adaptive best management practices that reduce the spread of northern snakeheads while still allowing migratory fish passage.

Smaller dams upstream of Conowingo Pond, which include Holtwood, Safe Harbor, and York Haven, may also slow the spread of snakeheads in Susquehanna River to Pennsylvania and New York.

SRAFRC is an interagency cooperative organization comprised of the fishery agencies from New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, the Susquehanna River Basin Commission, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is increasing its efforts to educate the public about the northern snakehead, having introduced several informational videos, supplemental fact sheets and an updated webpage.

Northern snakeheads were first observed in Maryland waters in 2002, and shortly after its discovery in Potomac River in 2004, the species gained a foothold in tidal waters. Since then it has spread to every major tributary of the Chesapeake Bay.

Anglers can catch and keep any size and any number of snakeheads year-round to help reduce the population. Anglers are also asked to report snakeheads caught in Maryland to fishingr...@maryland.gov or 410-260-8300.

Hadn't paid that much attention to primates at the zoo. I'll have to be more observant next time I go.

I tend to favor Dalton's guess, though my sense is I probably wouldn't need to rule out all possible alternatives to say, "this looks a hell of a lot like bucktail". I have at least dozen different species of hair in my tying desk and I'm pretty sure I could tell the deer/elk apart from the rest with my eyes closed.

As far as guesstimating a mythical creature's hair type: to the best of my knowledge, any hominid or close cousin would not have hair as stiff as deer hair. I've been to the zoo a fair number of times when the chimps and other primates were up against the glass, and their hair doesn't look to anything like deer hair. It's finer and wavier, and -- as Dalton said -- looks to be lots more supple. It also seems like it would be pretty lifeless in the water -- not flare on the hook or move enticingly. I expect bigfoot hair would be pretty useless as a fly tying material, if bigfoot were proven to be a real animal.

As it stands, I expect bigfoot fur has exactly the same properties as kraft fur.

That was my thought while reading this article as well. But in reality, I haven't seen any Bigfoot hair to compare to bear, deer, human, or other hair. I assumed Bigfoot hair would be thinner and more supple than deer, but who knows...
