{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Report from Rehoboth - warning involves bait fishing results as well...

Had to replace a carpet at my beach house so I spent the last couple of days in Rehoboth.  I heard about a gator blue fish bite happening so I timed the repair with the bite.

Spent a few days throwing bait and metal.  (see pics)
At the golden hour,  I am the parking lot in Lewes when I see a bunch of old guys putting on waders and stringing up fly rods...so we start talking.  They tell me the bait guys fish to the east and fly guys fish on the west end of the beach.  I had committed to throwing bait so I did not join them until the following night.

Thanks to Trent for recommending Regan for 2 hand rod casting lessons, I decided to put to use my 1 lesson and see what I could catch.  The old timers had said that there were fish around and so I geared up my 14' 7wt, put on a sink tip and joined these guys in the water.

Sensei was catching schoolie after schoolie on purple and black clousers.  I was getting jealous and frustrated as the 2 hand casts mostly sucked but somehow I got a few good ones in.  Luckily my saltwater 2 hand skunk was broken with a small bluefish.

Next night rinse and repeat.  I get a hit on a pink, brown and white clouser.  This was different, much stronger so I thought I was into a medium sized striper.  It got a little dicey as I was fighting him because I didn't want to high stick the rod and break it.  Well it breached it wasn't a striper but a nice size blue.  Fortunately or unfortunately he broke off my 20lb floro leader at the fly.  Upon inspection, it was chewed up.  I think if I muscled him more I could have brought him to hand. Great fight and lots of fun.

A few better casts with a pink and white clouser lead to a bite that was different.  I quickly brought to hand a flounder.  Was hoping for a rockfish to complete the DelMarVa grand slam but didn't have such luck.

Takeaways:
  • 2 handers are efficient.  I can see if you are trying to cover water, with more practice an effective cast will help you cover lots of water.
  • I got in 1.75-2x the number of casts to the single handers.  Pretty good when you are blindcasting and not as much work.  Definitely need to get better at casting.
  • Spring is good in the Potomac and the beach.  The bluefish are a blast to catch.
  • Change flies even for stripers.  Black and purple was working one night then it was pink and tan the next.  Chartreuse had not worked all spring - per sensei.
