{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Telescoping fly rod?

Hope this doesn't break any group rules, but this is a good deal for a travel rod with 23" sections. I've got the same rod in 7-piece and it travels everywhere with me: https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/spo/d/redington-wayfarer-fly/6760648111.html

I will say this, I had a 6 piece travel 8 weight for a long time from a reputable builder, I bought spare tip section like they were going out of style and I broke that rod so often I eventually threw it in the trash. I don't think most 6 piece + rods are all that durable, and they are a pain to setup and keep the line guides aligned.

My buddy got one yesterday out of VB near the Chesapeake Light Tower. Albert fishing out of VA though is not really common and there are no guides I know of. They come through but usually people see them while targeting other stuff. Example, I saw a school of them in August while fishing Kings.

I can't speak to Ocean City but I do know it's starting to get good down in NC. There are plenty of guides with days available now. One to look into besides the more well known ones (Sarah Gardner and Brian Horsely) would be Andrew Campbell. I know he had availability last weekend up until the day of and ended up doing really well.

I would imagine there has to be a spring run, not much on fishing for them outside of some guides down in moorehead city and obviously off long island. I can find tuna charters but those are not something I'd fly fish off of unless they were teasing fish.

Montaulk is great, but they don't call it a long island for nothing - long drive back and forth...so a closer alternative would be great.

Echo Trip 8-piece rods in 5, 6 and 8 weights are really nice and pack extra small.  With 8 sections they are a bit heavy, but they get the job done.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Tips on stillwater fly fishing

If you want to have consistent success you will likely need a depth finder and sinking line. In the cold months bass tend to suspend and/or school up in deeper water. That makes them pretty tough to target with a fly rod, and I have never actually figured out a body of water this way.

Also, at some point (probably in the recent past at this point) still waters "turn over" where the warm surface water cools off and sinks and the deeper water rises to the surface. It's a significant event that triggers changes in fish behavior. In still water it's all about figuring out the behavioral pattern the fish are exhibiting. Watch the bass tournament tv shows and you'll see what I mean.

Please report back if you figure it out!

A couple of thoughts..

1. I don't know anything about that lake but it may be more beneficial to focus on drop offs and other structure as opposed to the banks.

2. When I used to hike into brook trout ponds in the adirondacks I learned to pay attention to which way the wind was blowing. Oftentimes food would get blown into certain corners and the fish would concentrate there. No idea if this would apply to warm water fish but could be something to think about.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Telescoping fly rod?

I travel for work and in one trip started in the Bermuda and finished (after going through Portland and Victoria BC in trout season) in Kitimiat BC during a steelhead run. My solution is to just always throw two decent 4 piece rods in a multi rod tube and travel with them. Typically I travel with a 5wt and an 8 or 9wt. I try to predict my travels as well, for example I'm headed out on a work trip that will start in San Juan and end in Nassau, so this trip I'm just bringing a 8wt for bones and a 9/10 for everything else. I also bring my good reels, you never know what you'll see, my last trip I was sent somewhere with GTs and hooked into one, and was glad I had a good rod and reel despite loosing the fish. Lastly I carry my rod tube and put all my other gear in my carry on, never below.

If you are looking for a commuter rod, I have a 4 piece 7'6 3wt reddington hydrogen that packs tiny (I keep it in a backseat storage area in my tacoma) and is a blast to cast, pairs well with a reddington zero 2/3, and I used to throw a tenkara rod in my nathan's running pack when I went on longer runs in rock creek park.

One of my big concerns with the reyr rods is that everything is internal, seems like a lot of friction, and what do you do to reline the thing? I swap lines so frequently that it'd be a PITA to messenger a line through the rod all the time.

Interested in something more commuter backpack friendly but would also allow me to practice my casts.

If there's not a good option, I'd like to take a crack at making one out of something else.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Tips on stillwater fly fishing

Bob, I haven't fished Arrowhead, but keep in mind that bass definitely become less active as weather and water cool. I've zero pike experience, but expect that all of the things you are doing would work for bass in warmer weather.

Since it's cold and their metabolisms have slowed, try using an intermediate sinking line (or intermediate leader, much cheaper and will do the job) with a small bunny leech or bugger and slowing your strip way down to give sleepy bass a good look at your fly.

Can anyone point me to some good resources on still water fly fishing?  I've been poking around Lake Arrowhead in Luray on my Kayak, but have had little success.  Mostly, I wait until the warmest part of the day and chuck a streamer towards the bank.  Every once in a while I'll chuck a popper at the bank and when I'm feeling particularly wild, I'll chuck a nymph at the bank.  Something tells me still water fly fishing is more nuanced than that.  I know that Lake Arrowhead has bass, pike and perch to start with, any advice is appreciated.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Telescoping fly rod?

I travel to new places across the country a lot for work. I was sick of sitting in a hotel room down the street from decent looking water, kicking myself for not bringing a rod. So, I went and bought a Redington Wayfarerer (discontinued) 7-piece rod for cheap and now I take it EVERYWHERE with me. It breaks down to ~14" sections, or so, which is small enough to pack into any carry on. Shown here next to a 9' 4-piece rod tube. Highly recommend having something similar for travelling for work.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Erie Tribs

Six of us went on our annual Stlhd trip to fish the Erie Tribs of Pennsylvania last week.  Although we did not find to number of stlhd in the creeks that we had in previous years there were enough to make this trip one of the most productive trlips in years.  We started fishing last Monday on 20 Mile Creek.  Although there was plenty of water in the creek the fish were not spread out throughout the river as expected but were in the deeper runs.  All of us hooked fish and I ended the day with 8 hookups but no fish landed.

It started raining hard Monday night and all the area creeks were unfishable with high muddy water with lots of leaves.  However, by Wednesday 20 Mile Creek had cleared nicely and we found stlhd spread throughout the river.  I had better luck landing fish with 12 hookups and 8 landed.  Everyone else also had a good day hooking and landing stlhd.

On Thursday we fished Elk Creek and fished the water around Folly's Campground.  We found few fish downstream of Folly's but found a good number of fish in the deeper runs upstream especially in all the deeper runs at the base of the cliffs.  We all probably had our best day of hookups and landing fish of this trip here.

Smaller flies, 16-18s, seemed to work better, eg, small single egg patterns, green caddis larvae, small stoneflies, small Pheseant Tails.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Successful Iron Vise at Beer Tie

Big thanks to all who turned out on a rainy, raw November evening to compete in the 2018 Casting for Recovery Iron Vise at Beer Tie!
Rich Farino and Mark Sofman did a great job judging some pretty awesome flies. More than one disappeared into fly boxes after the competition.
Winners: tied for 3rd place Ed Cantow, Lane Thurgood, and Greg DiSalvo. Second place went to Raphael Victor.
And just to prove he really knows what he's doing, our own President Dalton Terrel took First Place.
Some really nifty raffle prizes persuaded many generous attendees to help kick off our Waders for our Ladies fund-raiser--enough was raised to buy the first outfit! Thank you very much everyone, and we're looking forward to seeing you all again next year!

I don't have a car either, but with my bike I've never had an issue with either a 4 piece rod tube on my backpack or strapped a rear rack. When I fish the canal for carp, i simply strap the rod to the side of the rack, and my net on top. Works great. Photo attached.

Several rod companies makes 5-8 piece rods that can fit inside your back pack. But I've never had an issue with a 4 piece rod biking or walking through the city. So rather than buying a new rod, look at some either fishing specific backpacks that have rod holders or day packs that have water bottle holders on the outside. You'll want one that has a strap about the water bottle holder that can secure the rod tube.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} National Sporting Museum and Library

I took a trip out to Middleburg yesterday and visited the National Sporting Museum.  I've driven by this place probably 100 times and had no idea it existed until just recently.  Anyway, they currently have an exhibit put on by the american fly fishing museum entitled "on the fly in the salt".  It is pretty neat and has a lot of history on salt water fly fishing including flies tied by most of the greats as well as some of the rods and reels used at various times.  I don't know if it is worth a trip on its own but there is enough other stuff to do around middleburg to make it a worthwhile part of a day trip.

What i found more interested was the collection of fly fishing books in the library which is by far the most impressive I have seen.  Easily several hundred volumes (maybe more) ranging on local specific fishing (fly fishing virginia) to classic volumes that you hear references to but probably never bother to pick up.  Unfortunately you can't take them out, but I could have easily spent a day just looking at the books.  If you ever wanted to kill and afternoon and read a modern dry fly code without buying it, this is the place to do it.

Just thought I would share.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Tips on stillwater fly fishing

Can anyone point me to some good resources on still water fly fishing?  I've been poking around Lake Arrowhead in Luray on my Kayak, but have had little success.  Mostly, I wait until the warmest part of the day and chuck a streamer towards the bank.  Every once in a while I'll chuck a popper at the bank and when I'm feeling particularly wild, I'll chuck a nymph at the bank.  Something tells me still water fly fishing is more nuanced than that.  I know that Lake Arrowhead has bass, pike and perch to start with, any advice is appreciated.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Salmon River Trip

Myself and Regan went up last Thursday for 3 days of swinging on the SR.  Arrived Thursday around noon and hit the water around 2:00  Water levels came up to 1650 out of the dam for the weekend and around 2000 at Pineville ramp and picking up more as you went down river. .  Over three days we covered a fair amount of water including the DSR on Friday morning.  I managed a 12"  atlantic on Thursday in the sportsman pool,  then we were both shut out after that.  Had a great time with Regan and a local guy who I have fish with over the years. It was good to get away from Northern Virginia.  Liked the reference to " uncle Keiths" fly.  wow, where is he these days.  I use to sit with him when we met at the Ra Rah for beer tie.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Washington County Musky

I haven't tested this theory myself but if I were confined to wading, I'd focus almost exclusively on tributary mouths. If you can get a situation where the Potomac is high and muddy but the river or creek feeding it is just slightly high and wadeable and bringing in relatively clear water compared to the main river...I'd expect them to prowl that transition area.  I have never caught one but I did have one follow at the mouth of the Cacapon and that particular spot is wadeable in typical fall flows.  Currently though...forget it, way too high.  I don't know of any pools on the main river that you could wade fish for them. A lot of the creek mouths have big gravel bars/gentle banks on the downstream side though.

Hi all,

I'd like to try my hand at fishing the Potomac for musky (smallies are fun too!) and have read that the Washington County area is ideal. Some spots I've found mentioned online are Dams 4/5, Taylor's Landing, Antietam Creek (at the mouth), and Harper's Ferry (near the bridge). While I do have a kayak, I would prefer to wade fish. What are ideal/safe flow rates and gauge heights for these areas? Would I be able to wade fish for these predators in those areas? I've only been out once for these fish and it was at Rocky Gorge in Laurel. The water was quite stained and I didn't see a single fish (not just musky/pike) in 4.5 hours there.

My setup is a 9' 9wt rod with both floating line and 350 grain sinking line. I have pre-made wire leaders. For flies, I have a variety. Most are made with bucktail. Baitfish head double deceivers, bucktail deceivers (both high-and-tight and bulkhead), and some standard game changers in white (standard being 10mm/15mm/20mm/25mm + hook with the body wrap). I also have some 1/0 gurglers, but those are more for bass. I'd like to add some 12" flies to the arsenal but haven't figured out which shanks to use yet to achieve that length with good motion. I tied a 9" brown trout imitation for big trout or bass this morning with craft fur but am not yet confident in how it will look in the water (layout is: 10mm - 10mm - #6 B10S - 15mm - 20mm - 20mm - 25mm - #1 TP610).

Any pointers you have would be great. I'd rather not make the drive then get washed away!
