Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} New Orleans advice

Hey Art, I don't have much intel on specific freshwater locations, but the canals hold carp and I'm sure bass. And alligators. I have also seen people fishing in City Park. I'm sure there's bass in there. And alligators. The guides might be able to nudge you in a freshwater direction if you so desire. I know at least a couple of them go after carp (on their own, not guiding) on blowout days in the marshes or if they don't have a client..

But, I assume you're staying in downtown New Orleans. In that case, your best alternative is to head on over to French 75 or Napolean House and enjoy a sazerac, then hit Mother's for a poboy.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Guided Trip Sept/Oct

Both guides look great and the schoolie action sounds like it would be great fun as a beginner.  It also sounds like there's a possibility for some fish busting bait on the surface.  You can't beat an explosion of water, so I'm all in.  Let's see what my dad thinks.  I'll be looking to book something soon, but will see if anybody else has other recommendations.

Are there any recommendations for fish to seek out, and guides to put us on them?

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Anyone Need a Raft?

Not sure exactly how old it is.  I've had it for around 5 years or so.  I'm guessing 8-10?  The bar over the front holds the casting platform off the bottom of the raft.  There is a thigh brace that mounts to it as well.  It's a pretty solid setup, not rocky at all.  The casting platforms in the front and rear are key so you don't have to stand on the inflated floor.  Works great for solid footing.
Let me know if you need any other info.

The Cataract Oars sell for about $450 and a comparable frame is $650. A new raft will run you over $3k without the frame, oars, or anchor/anchor line! I have it posted to Craigslist if you want to take a look.  I included a quick pic since I pulled it out today and cleaned it off.

It's my absolute favorite time of the year to fish the middle Chesapeake Bay!  And he won't need to cast far with a fly.  I use Gary Neitzey out of Kent Narrows: 410-937-8753.  It's only about an hour from DC.  Schoolie stripers will be the primary target.  You may still get some blues mixed in.  It's a great trip on fly or spin.

Also, any fly/gear recommendations? I'm planning to bring:

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Anyone Need a Raft?

I have to part with my raft.  Here are the details:
Star Raft with custom fishing frame. The raft is a 13 foot, self bailer and has casting platforms in the front and rear for anglers. Not used at all last year and only twice the year before, so I need it to go to a good home. I'm selling it complete with the oars, anchor, and anchor line. The Cataract Oars sell for about $450 and a comparable frame is $650. A new raft will run you over $3k without the frame, oars, or anchor/anchor line! I have it posted to Craigslist if you want to take a look.  I included a quick pic since I pulled it out today and cleaned it off.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Anyone fish Freedom Lake over on Andrews AFB?

Collin,
In the cooler water seasons, the pickerel will hang out in the shallow water on the south end of the lake.  I'll run down at lunch periodically to wet a line before getting back to work.
I saw your other post about the bass and I'm intrigued to see if I can entice them.  I was down there without a rod the other day and saw the larger bass cruising the east side.  Definitely have to give it a try.
Supposedly there are snakehead in there.  Outdoor Rec mentioned it when I asked about fishing the lake.  I've never seen anything gulping air though.  Maybe they just thought the pickerel were the same thing.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} double hand rods in Potomac

Nice that book describes the run times in great detail by stream. It also gives you so excellent suggestions on we're to park and fish.

I spent most of my life fishing for steelhead in the Great Lakes. It's one of the easiest fish to fool and they fight like crazy!!

Expect to see other anglers around. it's just that type of fishing environment. I'm alway laughing when people complain about pressure on steelhead streams. It's just like the shad run here, it's to be expected. Just embrace and have fun !

Be friendly and strike up conversation with with them. People are very quick to share there knowledge if your friendly.

I also caught steelhead in both Walnit and salmon river, but very limited experience. Walnut is easy to to get some actions but no casting. That is why I am thinking to explore other tribs.

If you've only fished Walnut Creek in Erie, and you STILL want to fish for steelhead, you're a better man than I.  If that was my only steel heading experience in Erie I'd never go back.

That said, I used to fish nothing but a 9' 6 or 7-weight with a floating line in Erie tribs.  I could still cast a marabou streamer pattern and swing, but I wouldn't need the longer length rod because I was casting overhead.

One year I wound up buying a Sage 7110-4 Z-Axis Switch.  I loaded it with a 350 Skagit body, and bought interchangeable tips.  Now I have a floating tip for bouncing egg patterns on smaller rivers, and I usually use a type 3 or type 5 tip on bigger rivers for swinging those same marabou spey patterns.  I also use it on the NB Potomac.

My next purchase will be a 4wt Winston Microspey.  I used it on the NB and it was a lot of fun.

So as Art mentioned, an 11' 7-weight is spot on.

Disclaimer – I don't use it on the Potomac.  Swinging flies is a waste of my time on this river, in my opinion.

Yep those rivers and mabey one or two to the west I would agree. In fact if I'm just swinging I use a 13 7 with a skagit setup. But for versatility and single hand casting I like the 11 footer.

I would suggest going to a flyshop and putting some different rods in your hand. Give them the ol wiggle test
