As I woke up this morning, it was really snotty, wind in the 10-15 mph gusts and drizzle. Fortunately when I got on the water the wind was from the north which lead to difficult back casting and open downwind loops. I saw the same scenario with bait getting smacked on the surface. I got 4 right away in the same 16-20 in range. Feisty guys but not fat bellies like I was expecting. What turned out to be my last fish was a 28-30in striper. He was a great fight and beautiful fish. Unfortunately my phone camera wasn't cooperating with the drizzle and while I tried to snap a picture nothing came of it.
My biggest learning curve came in the fly selection. I always lived by the adage that elephants eat peanuts but after a few long line releases, I switched it up to bigger flies. That paid off by landing more fish on day 1. Day 2 I went with a tandem of a 1/0 white clouser with no weight followed by #1unweighted brown/tan clouser. The smaller guys hit the trailer but the largest fish crushed the big fly.
Overall 10+fish some brought to hand and some longline releases. Great fishing in my book. If you get a chance to hit the beach, PM me for specifics on spots. The water is cold and I could only go about 90 minutes before shivering too much.
Hopefully more fishing at dusk today before heading back for the work week.
