{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Cabo San Lucas report

Just got back from a week in Cabo San Lucas with wife and kids.  Stayed at the Sheraton Hacienda.  This was the view from the hotel to the fishing grounds, about 100 yards south.

Being a DIYer, I did not hire a guide nor did I got out on a panga I just took what the beach gave me. 

For reference I brought an 11ft surf rod, 7'6" ft inshore rod and a 9 wt. 

I fished almost exclusively around the rocks using a Florida technique with shrimp under a popping cork.  I land a bunch of different species using that style in and around the rocks.  One morning I put the same reel loaded loaded with 30lb braid on the 11ft'r and tried for Roosters by casting a 6oz spoon.  3rd cast caught some coral and the braid was cut off.  While I prefer to fly fish, I wasn't so sure surf/rocks fishing would work out so well.

I was pleasantly surprised and on the most windy day and the next day I ventured out to the far rock pile and cast across the pool.  An experienced fisherman told me tuck rod under arm my arm and double hand strip the flies to induce a bite.

I was fortunate to land several reef cornetfish but not get any pictures.  These guys look like gars but without the teeth. I used both fast and intermediate sinking lines with short leaders and smallish flies.  I found that a tandem setup worked better with an attractor clouser or crab pattern trailed by a smaller clouser. 

The cool thing was these guys hung around the 6in mark in the water column, fast stripping induced the strike and you could see them chase.  When they saw the flies, they chased and hit pretty voraciously.  Upon being hooked, they jumped out of the water.  It was quite fun and I can now check the box on Pacific Ocean fish caught on a fly.

Anyone heading to Cabo, hit me for some details about what I would do differently.

Looking forward to some Shad in the good ole Potomac but already miss that pretty blue water.
