If it is your first time heading up from Fletchers I would wear a life jacket. Alex may lend you one. It may not look cool but you can still cast fine.
I wear one still when I wade up there and cast one of my two handed rods from shore.
It's tough to swim should you slip and are in waders. Tougher still if you hit your head. Plus the current picks up a day or two after a good rain (for future reference). This is overly cautious but you can google stories of people who have died up there, as mentioned above, as well as the crew coach down here in Alexandria that fell out of a launch over the summer years ago and drowned.
