Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Need Info for Fletchers....shad

Thanks to all that provided input.  I am happy to report that guy I wanted to catch a fish caught one shad and lost another.  He was happy.  As I suspected he showed up with salt water surf rods.  Good thing I rounded up three light weight spinning rods.  Left a little lead on the bottom but less than I expected. A lot of folks out there on the DC side. Its a shame the access to the VA shore side is so limited (maybe its a life saver).  I don't think he will ever be a fly fisherman but anyone fishing with artificial bait is really part of use (especially if you consider some of the "flies" thrown on heavy rods these days - can you say "articulated bodies").  For those I met in the parking lot - send me an email about the Ghillie.     Thanks again

Hi All,
My Daughter's Father-in-law has been after me to take him fishing.  We have nailed down this Sunday morning and I thought we should try for some shad at Fletcher's.  We will not be fly fishing as I am sure he doesn't.  I am not real sure how good of spin fisherman he is.  I thought I would gather some spinning rods and get some shad darts and decorate the bottom with lead.  I have only been to Fletcher's once.  Where is the easiest area to fish with some likely hood of success.  I have parked in the lower lot and attended one of the Saturday casting clinics.  Would we fish the river where the clinic was held.  I have boots  for all.  Whats the near shore wading like along there?  I know there is generally no wading on the VA side.  I seem to be obligated to take him fishing and I suppose its the thing to do since we both share a granddaughter. He's a nice guy, anyway.

As far as shad darts on a spinning setup - do you fish more than one dart or is that just a quicker way to loose all the bait?

Played hooky and fished from 9 - 12:30.  River is very low and clear.  slow start, but it got pretty hot around 11.  I ended up landing 11 hickory shad, all large except one around 10 inches.  Weather was pretty good, wind came up and down, and temp was warming whole time.  Most of the fish were toward the southern end of the drift.  Seemed like most of the hits were happening mid water column.
