Will you take a slightly used cheeseburger in trade?

lol not on topic but see my post on photographing fish for my thoughts on that.

As far as the topic on hand, I need to fish more in 2016.  I fished less in 2015 (I think only about 20-25 days) which is less than any year since i started.

I don't consider it a resolution since a resolution should be something you actually have control over, but my goal for 2016 is to catch a permit on the fly.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: 2016 Angling Resolutions

I don't think anyone ever changes anyone's opinion with online posts.  My experience is that people change their opinions and behavior when they decide to do so on their own.

People have a lot of strong opinions on just about everything, including fly fishing.  Most folks on here are probably very nice, reasonable people in person.

Try to remember that every time you see a picture of a trout laying in grass, muddy water, etc. that the person taking it probably has a valid fishing license, actually enjoys fishing and thus cares about he resource, and undoubtedly chooses to release many, many fish that they could otherwise legally kill, clean, and eat at home.  (Beth and I catch many brook trout > 9 inches every year, and we've eaten not a single one, ever).

I will not post anything further to avoid hijacking this thread.  I'm going to make another manhattan!  Happy New Year!

No issues at all in the marina near the Pentagon, and there is a nice launch area. I go from there with my SUP to fish quite a bit.

Mine is to stay the course!  With a wife who is a competent and avid fly fisher, I'm burning through a pair of simms in about 6 months and korkers in 4-5 months (and both are excellent products).

There is nothing else folks - community, family, religion are dead ends.  There is only fishing, a bunch of idiots who don't know how to parallel park, ice cream sandwiches, and death.

For 2016 I'd like to add a new native species to my list; greenback cutthroat. I plan on accomplishing the goal with Justin when I go visit him in Colorado. I also hope to finally land a striper on the fly as this was one of my goals for 2015 that was not accomplished. My main goals for 2015 were to keep getting better at casting (something we all are always working on I'm sure) and to finally catch a wild brown trout (both were accomplished).

On the last one, I said I wanted to catch a new native species, and I was lucky to do so in 2014 with Snook, Tarpon, and Rio Grand Cutthroat; 2015 was successful again as I caught a Mahi Mahi on the fly as well as Sea Run Cutthroat. Here's to keeping this going in 2016. In addition to this, I would like to get back to fishing more locally 2016.

I work in fisheries. All of the imported tilapia in US markets (which is damn near all of it) is fed a steady diet of antibiotics and pig/chicken/duck/human shit. Don't eat tilapia. Ever.

Still has hundreds of LMB, some yellow perch, bluegill, crappie, and a few catfish.  You can catch so many fish on a fly that they'll wear the point down and destroy all the materials tied to it.

Saw a massive catfish meandering around, but I think he was blind (cataracts, battle scars).

Just my opinion, but the outfall sucks compared to the other spots recently.  Don't waste your life away standing there when you can be hooking up on every other cast elsewhere ;).  Unless that's what you like.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Potomac at night

Well, just got home from an interesting outing on the Potomac.  Left the Bolling AFB marina around 4:00 or so, headed down towards the Woodrow Wilson.  Cut out of the channel near Blue Plains, went in near the pier.  Saw a bunch of returns on my fishfinder, along with some topwater hits, so I threw out my anchor and cast around for a while with a Clouser grey/white.  No hits, and it was dark at this point so it was tough to cast.  I'm still new to fly fishing, and I rely a lot on visual cues to nail my cast, so doing it at night without a headlamp was interesting.

After a while I pulled up my anchor and headed further south.  I wanted to check out the Spoils, and practice getting there in the dark.  I've made that run from Blue Plains to the Spoils a handful of times, but only in daylight and I wanted to get my nighttime visuals lined up.  It was a little chilly, but I made it past Fox Ferry Point with no issues, actually found a really nice hole to pass through the old pier.

Once I got to the spoils it started raining and I started losing morale, so I turned around pretty quickly.  Made it back past the point and headed back to the marina without further issues.

Honestly not that exciting from a fishing point of view, but it was a lot of fun playing around in the dark and getting more familiar with the Potomac.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Costa Rica - Help!

OK, since my name was taken in vain above, I have to respond.

Good basic advice here. Walk the beach and look for structure and/or bait. Seemingly featureless beaches that have bait have yielded great rooster/mackerel/jack action up and down the Pacific Coast for me. Erratic and fast seems to be the only thing that works and most of the hits come right behind the face of the wave in front of you.

If you want to find a boat, head over to the Los Suenos marina, which is 15 -20 minutes out of Jaco on 34 north up the coast. I took all my trips out of that marina. There are a lot of condo owners that keep captains and crews for their boats that sit idle. I have a feeling you might be able to grab a budget trip if you call over there or drive over there. You might not have wheels, but cabs/for-hire cars run between the two towns. There is also a fantastic seafood joint on the beach just off the Los Suenos property to the south - La Baracuda. Best food I found down there. I found the beach fishing to not be very good around Los Suenos. Had a few jacks terrorize my poppers (I don't fly fish in the surf) but no hook ups.

I also found that once I had my fill of hookers and blow, I didn't like Jaco very much. But it should be perfect for a bachelor party. If you head south on 34 down the coast there is a little surfer village called Estero Oeste. There used to be a couple great beach bars there, one is the Lowtide Lounge http://lowtidelounge.com/home.html. No affiliation/no advertisement but I had one of my most pleasant days drinking in that bar. Highlight of my Costa Rica trip frankly. I heard they closed, but their website is still up. There is a really great beach break there for surfing, but the reef that creates the break joins the beach to the north and you can walk out on it. There is some sort of statue on it or something. You can only walk out there at low tide. I did not fish there but the locals say the fishing off those rocks is good and the bar was plastered with pics of roosters and big toros. As someone said above, the Pacific swells are no joke. Be careful wading and never turn your back on the water.

But seriously, be careful what you buy from the vendors on the Jaco beaches. They have EVERYTHING for sale.

Leader either a level piece of 20 lb flouro with about 2 feet of 40 or 50 lb flouro bite tippet, or if you want to be fancier, 4 feet of 40, 3 feet of 20, then 18 inches of bite tippet. Flies small 2-4 inch sardine patterns and sardine looking clousers. However, for jacks and snook and roosters (boat) you'll want the hooks to have a fairly deep bite. Easterners often tie them on hooks that are a bit small.  I'm all for fly fishing but if you're open to spin fishing then a 3 piece 8-17 lb class spinning rod with 30 lb braid, 50 lb flouro leader, and small 3-5 inch saltwater poppers and swimmers will give a lot more reach and flexibility from shore. Heresy, I know.  If you are boat fishing I would go up a notch in gear weights. Note when you fly out of Costa Rica all the loaded  reels, sharps, tools, and rolls of line/leader must be in your checked luggage. They WILL NOT let you carry them on and it's a big hassle for the uninitiated at security. (Sharps is normal, but Costa Rica seems weird about the reels/line/leader, and small non-sharp tools like hemostats). Tight lines and Pura Vida. - Paul

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: The Tilapia is back in 4MR

I caught a tilapia down in Saint Marteen, two guys hauling trash were watching when I landed it.  One guy took it home to eat. Poop eater plus polluted water where that one came from...I don't even want to speculate.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Come on - it's Friday so let's talk about trout

First time I ever went out to fish exclusively with nymphs, the early days of my fly fishing ca.1985, I was fishing a pod of fish (8, 10 or 12 good sized ones!)  under a bridge near the old Crayola factory on Bushkill Creek in Easton PA when an older fisher gent up on the bridge pointed out to me that they were suckers and I was wasting my time. ;-) The next week I did much better on stocker rainbows in Martins Creek. A couple of those came home for dinner.

Well, then thank you kindly!  That reel is sitting in the bed of the truck now that I think about it.....better put it away when I get home.

Several weeks ago (end of summer) she hooked a monster in there on a really small midge nymph (or pupa?....after a few weeks it gets fuzzy) and he ran her off on some brush.  Indicator went floating downstream, the whole beautiful picture.  I'm still hearing about that even though I'm almost certain the snag was to blame. ;)  I saw him on bottom "flashing", eating something...but I gave up after a few casts.  I don't have the patience like she does.

I think I was that guy! I've never met you, Beth, but I did offer my net to someone fishing the hole below me on the lower section of beaver.  I had seen a bruiser in there earlier that morning, and the sound of the reel made me think you had him.  I wanted to get a look at that fish, so the least I could do was offer you my net!  Great fish ^^ by the way!  I've hooked into some of the beasts on beaver, but haven't landed anything over the magic number of 20".  The big ones always tend to find a way off.

These posts are running together, but speaking of click-and-pawls......Beth's 3-weight has one of those battenkill clickers with 1/2 of a 3-weight line spooled on it and it makes a lot of bloody noise.  She hooked a decent rainbow (not nearly as nice as the one above ^^) and it pulled "buzz" for a bit at first, to the extent that another guy above us offered his net ;).

She said "Oh, no thank you.  He's not that big....this crappy reel just sucks is all".  Lol.  I guess she doesn't like palming.

Hey, it holds line --

I was also going to add -- in that same stretch with all of the fat fish I hooked a decent brown sitting in about a 1" square in between 2 pockets.  Couldn't believe a fish was in there, but I guess he decided to hide tightly in there.  He whacked my PT nymph the moment it dropped 1" into the water.....telling me  that it could have been a booger with a hook on it and it would have been just as effective.

I think we saw that fish -- was it the first "riffle pocket" upstream from the private line stretched across the stream (by the wood pile)?  Couldn't get him to take anything.  2 of his buddies shared the same pocket and I got them, but no dice on the big fella.

Good job with a great rainbow --

Yeah I am trying to get in that club. I just posted about getting a few with size 28 fly. I had 7x on tho. One was over twenty for sure but i never got a photo it plopped back in off the beach lol. Two were about 18 and I was pleased with that.  Fights took me a while.. similar to your 6x beaver bow. So much fun.

Actually no; I was fishing the lower area, just downstream of the dead water. I've also gotten into a few bows (and brownies) up by the hatchery. But it's a long hike/walk to just fish a few plunge pools, so I normally just fish behind the shop and at the lower section.

Sounds like a great day man. That's a tough stream, so much respect. I presume you  got into those bows closer upstream to the hatchery then?

Yeah, I'd say it went pretty well (see pic). (And I bet this bruiser could at least stand a chance vs. a muskie, Rich.) All bows, no brownies for a change. There were some BWOs and rises, but not much. I had luck on golden retrievers, small orange estaz eggs, shaky worms, and BH FB PTs.

Ha-ha this is hilarious good stuff Ashley. How'd beaver end up treating you ? I love that stream... Were the BWOs popping? I had some friends up there this weekend. According to them, the fishing was slow but still got a few on scuds and sich. Hopefully you had a good go.
