I wanted to see if anybody else has had a similar experience in catching more wild rainbows over the past few years in the North Branch (specifically between Barnum and the confluence with the lower savage).

Also, wanted to see if anybody has had any luck catching any of the giant browns in the system.  I have dedicated full days of floating miles of the system (Barnum - Rawlings) searching for that one big fish.  Over the past ~1.5 years I have pulled out a ~21.5 and ~23 inch brown (these fish were caught approximately 15 minutes apart) and about 6 fish in the ~18.5 - 20 inch range.  With the exception of 1 of these larger browns, they have all come on enormous articulated streamers between December - March.  Wanted to know if other anglers dedicate significant time on this river specifically targeting the giant browns that inhabit this river.  I often wonder what the biggest brown in the system is (I'm thinking ~27 inches), and also curious if anybody has every done a float on the North Branch using mice patterns.

Also, posting a few pics including a 23 inch brown (North Branch) 17.5 inch brown (lower savage), and possibly the state record fall fish (wish I weighed it), humble brag!

Fly Write-up:
I originally started tying this fly to mimic a small crab to target Redfish and other saltwater species that will go after a crustaceans, but I've found that it's also a great little fly for Smallmouth Bass. The Finn Raccoon tail and rubber legs really make the fly come alive under water, and the Holo-Fiber Wrap under the EP brush adds just the right amount of flash.

Brian Bennett's Biography:

IMG-20240807-WA0004.jpg
From the banks of the Shenandoah River in Berryville, VA, to the vibrant waters of Belize, my lifelong love for fishing has evolved into an exciting adventure. Fishing was my vice from a young age, with countless days spent bass fishing during the day and catfishing at night. My modest collection of six rods quickly swelled to 35 when I discovered the thrill of surf fishing.
A pivotal moment came when my fiance and I planned a diving trip to Belize. Eager to try fly fishing, I visited my local Orvis, purchased my first rod, and took casting lessons. With the guidance of a local expert, I hooked my first Bonefish—and my passion turned into what my fiance and kids humorously refer to as a "problem."
After a Fly-Tying 101 class at Orvis, I found myself with yet another "problem" at home—an overwhelming collection of fly material! My fiance, noticing the situation, playfully suggested I turn my obsession into a business. Thus, VICE Fishing Co. was born.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Potomac North of Harper's Ferry

I was up around harpers ferry yesterday and the river is still smoked.  Going to be a bit until it is fishable.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: John Gierach, R.I.P.

Good Flies was a really cool book of his, for anyone out there that hasn't read it. A fair bit of attribution & brief discussions of the origins for a wide selection of patterns and some interesting back stories on them made for a very entertaining book. Most of all, he was able to not take himself too seriously while earnestly discussing his thoughts on flies -- aesthetically and practically --and it was a really fun read. I'd recommend it to anyone who tinkers at the vise, and is always modifying something. Even where you may disagree with him (he likes foam, I hate it; he hates bead heads, I'm quite okay with them) sitting with considered and crafted text (I wouldn't call them arguments) was very much worth the exercise in terms of considering my own assumptions.  It also didn't hurt that he & AK Best had a really long history and a ton of Best's thought on materials and techniques show up in the book as well.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: C&O Canal Water Levels

They're apparently dredging the entire reach of the canal. This came from one of the workers who I ran onto last summer around Swains Lock. Not sure about water levels around Carderock, but everything I've seen from Chain Bridge up to Swains has been super low. You can find pockets here and there if you're willing to walk, but it's really low.

Interestingly, this hasn't translated (at least for me) into better carping conditions. I spent a few hours a couple of weeks ago around Chain Bridge and I didn't see a single fish. Weird, considering the excellent sight fishing conditions.
