Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fernie, BC - Elk River....

Great report!
Brings back memories of a similar trip years ago, especially the Bull trout on the Wigwam, chasing a fish 1/4 mile down the river.

Elk River, Michel Creek, Wigwam and upper Bull were the rivers we fished, combo of drift boat, raft and walk/wade.  All dry fly and streamers, only one barbless hook allowed.  Caught one 20"+ cutt in less than 6 inches of water on a tiny side stream, multiple bull trout over 8 lbs (6wt worked hard!) on the wigwam river.

Great guides, beautiful scenery, and fish were very cooperative.  Great exchange rate.

If you want details, reach out or check out https://elkriver.ca/  Paul is the owner.  DIY hard due to limited classified licenses for many of the rivers.

(and thanks for grabbing it.  I was about :30 minutes away before I realized I left it there and glad you grabbed it before I finally made it back)

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Digest for tidal-potomac-fly-rodders@googlegroups.com - 2 updates in 1 topic

Dropped my kid off at camp near Rose River Farm yesterday. The Robinson down there had huge mats of green algae floating on the top. Didn't see much of a current.

The Rappahannock off 29 looked like more sand than water.

Didn't think we could get lower water than end of last summer.

My guy Travis Edens who guides on both rivers says the bite has been incredibly strong in the spring and early summer but with the lack of rain it's been a bit more erratic. Apparently topwater bite has been strong.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Smallmouth

I've had some pretty good days on yellow gurglers and on streamers of various kinds. Plenty of nice smallmouth around, although this heat wave is probably putting them down. Last week I also landed four channel cats on a blue/black clawdad. Should pick up with some rain and cooler temps later this week.

Hi Everybody,

Great news! We have new shirts on offer for purchase!! They are intentionally in "bass green" color, and the material is a tri-blend of poly, cotton, and rayon. The hand feel is awesome, and they are very lightweight - not a hoodie thickness, more like a t-shirt/sun shirt thickness. Shirts are available in sizes Small to XXL for Men and Women's Small Medium and Large. Women's shirts are in "Gray Frost" color. Price is $30 per shirt. Email me if you want to reserve a size, or come to beer tie next Monday to pick one up. Please support TPFR by buying our merch!!!

We'll be tying up green/black dog day cicada flies next week. I fished these on the Patapsco with Misty a year or so ago and caught a lot of smallies and red ear sunfish. Easy to tie. Makes a big splat.

Hi Misha,

I'll definitely take one.

Depending on manufacturer I'm often between a Med or Large so will say Medium for now and ask if I can swap out to a Large if necessary (if there are extras available to do so Monday evening).

Thanks

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} CASTING for Sunday, 14 July (second Sunday of the month)

Regan Burmeister reganebur@gmail.com

Mon, Jun 3, 8:23 PM
to tidal-potomac-fly-rodders
We will have our casting get together on Sunday, 14 July at Fletcher's Cove from 8am to 11am.

We have a particular focus on getting more distance and making distance casts. Come learn how to make the longest casts, with less effort, than you have ever made.

Additionally, we will work on FFI Casting Skills challenges for anyone interested.

Come on out, whether you are a novice, intermediate, or advanced caster, it is all fun to work on solving casting problems and casting challenges.

If you are just getting started, this is a great way to meet people who can help.  There will be casting instructors on hand.
If you are preparing for an upcoming trip and looking to re-fresh your casting skills, this is a great opportunity.

Regan

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} TPFR Long Sleeve Shirts

The shirts are true to size. I'm a medium and I'm wearing a medium. Sorry, should have mentioned that!

Also i mis- identified the date of the next beer tie. It's on the 15th instead of the 8th because it's always after casting church and casting church is the second Sunday of every month. Because the second Sunday and the second Monday are separated this month, beer tie moves.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Getting Annoyed with Poor Access

Thanks, Herman.

Yes, Brook Rolter and I look forward to welcoming those hoping to get into the Rappahannock smallie game at the Fair Lakes Starbucks at 8 am this Sunday, July 7, for a  Northern Virginia Trout Unlimited  Fish With a Member trip. Depending on the size of the group, we'll be fishing Hogue Tract and Rockwall, another access point a half mile upstream and across. Both are above Kelly's Ford boat launch.

More generally, yes, good smallmouth water is hard to access without a boat on the Rappahannock or Rapidan. I walked four 1/2 miles upstream yesterday and then back to an access point.

Best,
Owen

Apologies for the threadomancy, but I wanted to respond to OP on access CF Phelps WMA.  You are correct the "main" area of the WMA you went to is useless for wading; I tried it 25 years ago.

A better spot than Kelly's Ford is the Hogue Tract of the WMA.  It's on the East bank of the river, upstream a bit from Kelly's.  Remembering which trailhead efficiently gets you down to the river is a struggle for me, but I've gone down there with friends and caught smallmouth and redbreast sunfish.  It used to be very productive for creek chubs in the spring.

HELPFULLY, the local Northern Virginia TU chapter is running a smallmouth wade down there this weekend.  I won't be able to join, but Owen and Brook who frequent this board will be leading and can help with details.

Ah fair enough, sorry! Was totally intended to be a dig at Fairfax county for bleeding the populace dry with exorbitant rental rates rather than a dig at a perfectly capable kayak. Considering I don't have a boat of any sort, they're all yachts to me!

On C.F. Phelps - I just found it kind of frustrating - it's on literally miles of public water, but there is no access to it except two spots: 1) up at the Kelly's Ford boat ramp, and 2) down at the furthest downstream tip of the WMA where there's another boat ramp. Even that furthest south boat ramp, they close the gate to the road that accesses it, so it's a 1.5 mile walk one way just to get to the river (couldn't imagine doing that with a kayak of any sort). I walked for miles around the upstream part (near the barn) trying to find anything that could access the river, was bushwhacking through small game trails that became a wilderness of thorns and thickets, and was still a fair clip away from the actual water. I really did try to get down there. Who knows, maybe was completely in the wrong place.

To me it's just a completely missed opportunity. The CF Phelps WMA is totally viable for multiple types of outdoor recreation, but it really only caters to hunters and it shows. Wish it was possible or legal (is it?) to blaze a trail meant specifically for anglers down there, giving more opportunities closer in to the larger population areas. It'd still be a pretty decent walk, so it'd deter a lot of the people just looking to poach.

Anywho, that's me off my soapbox. Hope y'all have better luck than I did this weekend :)

Andrew,

Can you provide some clarity on "poor access" at C.F. Phelps WMA? You say it looked like the trail dipped down to the river. Was there an impediment to you accessing the water like a fence? What made the access to the water poor? Was the wooded area to dense to reach the Rapp?

Also, can we watch the language on the forum please? One persons shhhhhh canoe is another persons yatch.

Starting to get annoyed with this state (VA) and the poor access we have to what should be public water. I spent like 3 hours walking around the C.F. Phelps WMA this morning/afternoon looking for any point of access to the Rappahannock River only to find that despite the trail map looking like it dipped down to the river, it does not.

For anything walk/wade, I pretty much always have to drive out to Shenandoah NP for brookies or the Shenandoah NF/SF for smallmouth. Closer in, it's really tough and almost not worth it for a wading angler with the limited public access. I don't have room to store/transport a kayak, so I'm pretty well locked into walk/wade.

I've gone to a ton of places, esp for smallmouth. Anything closer in to NOVA than a 1.5h drive is either zero public access or environmentally dead. Am I just missing something? Or should I just be ok with driving 3-4h round trip just to get my weekly fix?
