{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Who's got an opinion about The River Why?

Thank you all for your thoughtful, considered opinions.

After reading about 40% of it (acc to my Kindle Paperwhite) in addition to this being my 3rd attempt, I've put it aside as just so much literate self-indulgence. It just didn't capture me, grab me, earn my enthusiastic engagement.  Joseph Heywood's The Snowfly, which I read a couple of months ago (for the second time), was a much better story.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Who's got an opinion about The River Why?

Mark,

100% worth a read. Will probably make you reevaluate why you fly fish…in a good way. I decided to never watch the movie, because the book simply doesn't need a movie adaptation. It's set in the pacific NW, which I have visited once and yet the writing about the area Gus plies with his fly rod and general fishy acumen is vivid enough to paint a near perfect picture of area.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Best Canoe / Kayak Put-In Spot on Potomac for Shad

There's a park and very limited parking on the South/Town of Occoquan (Prince William County) side of the footbridge.  I thought I saw a sign last year saying that no fishing was allowed there, but Greg is right about the quality of fishing.  The North/quarry side (Fairfax County) of the bridge I'm uncertain, but skeptical about how public the access is.  I think boat is best there, particularly with fly rod, but the river isn't wide at that spot.

Greg,

Is the Occoquan best fished by boat? I have found a little room on the Occoquan regional park side, for shore fishing, but be prepared for some rock hopping.

I see people fish the far bank, near the water treatment plant outlet, but I have not figured out how people get there without trespassing. Maybe there is a path on the far side of the pedestrian bridge I missed?

As Hermany mentioned, there is a new launch under the bridge on the Occoquan, on the downstream side of the old town.  You can also launch from Occoquan Regional Park at the parking area next to the water.  The fishing near the pedestrian bridge and upstream in the rock garden is phenomenal.

Mark,

I have not read it or any books by James Duncan.  But Amazon gives it a relatively high rating.  The book is available through the Fairfax library Libby App as either an E-Book or Audio book.

Hope this gives you an idea.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Who's got an opinion about The River Why?

I'm hoping to enlist some assistance from the few, the proud, the literate among the members of TPFR:

Should I bother to read The River Why ?

It's the 1983 novel by David James Duncan.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} FFC Shad Report #1

Yea, tbh depending on where you live you're probably better off either making shad a weekend thing (if out towards Fredrick) or a morning before work/cut out early thing (if you reverse commute). But Violette's lock is near you and that's very good in the summer for smallmouth bass if it's a good year for bass.

Hi, being new to FF for Shad this year and regrettably I was not able to attend the last Casting Church where that was discussion point.  Can anyone let me know if C&O Canal lock 21 is traditionally a place where Shad can be caught?  and is the river accessible there, looks like it was?  I've been down there just a few times for walks and it's close to my office which is why I am asking.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Best Canoe / Kayak Put-In Spot on Potomac for Shad

If you can get your boats through the tunnel at Fletcher's that's your best bet on the Potomac.  I assume one can still launch from the beach there.   Not the Potomac itself but a tributary, the Occoquan River in VA has two kayak launch spots within a mile below the dam where the hickory shad congregate.  If you do go there, I should be there this weekend myself.
