{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Shad Fly Suggestion…

For those venturing out this weekend, I had good success recently with a "If it ain't chartreuse, it ain't no use" clouser trailed off the bend in the hook by a green damsel fly nymph.  (Pretty sure it was one of Rob Snowhite's…)I boated 20+ Hickories (a few in the 16+" range) with that set-up in about 2 hours and had a number of double hook-ups. Sadly—but not surprisingly—didn't land any of the doubles. Sigh…   The...

The bite was slow in the early morning today, but picked up at 9ish.  It wasn't quite fast and furious, but I caught about 8 and missed about twice that.   Mostly Hickories, but my boat-mate caught a couple of decent sized Americans. Carl--Carl ZmolaOn Tue, Apr 26, 2022 at 2:54 PM Garrison Grisedale <garrison.grisedale@gmail.com> wrote:Thanks guys! went out and had to wade a bit, which was sketchy, but...

Hey Garrison.  I was out at Fletcher's Cove on Thursday and the Hickories were running strong.  I suppose if you have one heck of a roll cast you can get out far enough from some points on the banks.  I would try about a mile upstream of Fletchers, or go down stream to Walker's Point.  Make sure you do that during low tide.  Good Luck.  GreggOn Saturday, April 23, 2022 at 12:45:33 PM UTC-4 garrison....@gmail.com...

This is really cool. Only been in the area since last July and I have an 11 foot TFO Switch rod I use to use for fishing the pacific north west while stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA. I think the skagit would be the way to go. You would definitely need to manage your sink depth with the length of your tip. All my tips are T14 in various lengths. You could also go the route of a scandi head with versi leaders. That way you could vary...

There are kayak rentals available in Occoquan Regional Park as well as in downtown Occoquan - assuming that water is navigable right now.  There are various points where you can fish from shore - there is a wooden dock upstream of the boat launch in the Occoquan Regional Park.  You can also fish from the retaining wall downstream of the boat launch, or further down stream in the direction of the bridge in downtown Occoquan...

I have not fished it for shad personally so I can't speak to the bank fishing, but the Patuxent River may be running a bit more clear as it is a lot smaller than the Potomac and has some dams upstream to control flow. On the flip side it is sandy and muddy and can turn dirty easily - I am not sure how long it takes to clear up. Might not work out unfortunately. Deer Creek is about 1.5 hours away and also has a shad run, but...
