{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Shad Fly Suggestion…

For those venturing out this weekend, I had good success recently with a "If it ain't chartreuse, it ain't no use" clouser trailed off the bend in the hook by a green damsel fly nymph.  (Pretty sure it was one of Rob Snowhite's…)

I boated 20+ Hickories (a few in the 16+" range) with that set-up in about 2 hours and had a number of double hook-ups. Sadly—but not surprisingly—didn't land any of the doubles.

Sigh…

The majority of the hookups were on the nymph, including a number of hookups when I was just getting ready to recast, so the fly was moving up through the water column.  An almost trout-like situation, which really surprised me. My suggestion would be to pause momentarily before recasting.

Outfit and tackle? 8-wt Orvis with a full sink bank shot line.  Straight 20# fluoro to the first fly and 10# to the second fly.

Good luck!

Pete

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Shad Question

The bite was slow in the early morning today, but picked up at 9ish.  It wasn't quite fast and furious, but I caught about 8 and missed about twice that.   Mostly Hickories, but my boat-mate caught a couple of decent sized Americans.

Hey All,

Tentatively I'm going to try and do the same trip this Thursday April 21st in the afternoon.

So slight change of plan. Instead of 11:00 a.m. we will meet at the same place Old Mill Park in Fredericksburg
At 3:00 p.m. Skip grabbing lunch at the Mason-Dixon Diner and go straight to fishing.

Kind of a free form fishing day
Meeting at Old Mill Park in the larger parking lot. First going to the Mason-Dixon diner to grab lunch. Then go fishing for as long or as short of a time as you want.
The primary target fish will be Hickory Shad. However there are many other species of fish in the same stretch of river including Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Snakehead and possibly Stripers. So you may want to have a variety of flies with you.
If you plan on wading. I would highly recommend wading shoes/boots with some kind of cleats or felt souls. And a wading staff. Parts of the river bottom are rocky, steep sloping and slick .
Wading the  Rappahannock River can be dangerous do so at your own risk.

IF WE GET A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF RAIN LEADING UP TO THE TRIP, AND THE RIVER IS HIGH/MUDDY/DISCOLORED. THE TRIP MAY BE CANCELED.

If the trip is canceled I will definitely post this on the list serve.

If anyone has questions email or text

Eight people turnout for Sunday's single and two-hand Spey Casting Church.

About five of the attendees were completely new to Spey casting. The other three had some experience or had been trying to learn on their own.

To start things off, Regan, the Spey instructor, discussed the background and characteristics of single-handed rods, switch-rods, and Spey-rods. Attendees were introduced to general Spey fly line characteristics. He also touched on the differences between casting, switch casting (a dynamic roll cast), and Spey casting (changing the direction of a dynamic roll cast).

Through Regan's generosity, each type of rod was made available for on-the-water demonstrations and practice. Each attendee had an opportunity to get one-on-one hands-on experience with the single and two-hand rods and, with Switch and Spey casting.

Casting Church takes place 8-to-11 am on the second Sunday of the month at Fletchers Cove's lower parking lot. Looking forward to seeing you there.

My friends don't have waders and such so preferably anything that allows for some bank fishing.  Appreciate any and all advice!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Rappahannock River Unofficial Outing Sunday April 17th.

Mia Copa !
I planned a fishing trip that's starting Easter morning. Want to give anybody who wants to go fishing but still make most Easter services the ability to do both.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: CASTING CHURCH - Sun 10 April

This is really cool. Only been in the area since last July and I have an 11 foot TFO Switch rod I use to use for fishing the pacific north west while stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA. I think the skagit would be the way to go. You would definitely need to manage your sink depth with the length of your tip. All my tips are T14 in various lengths. You could also go the route of a scandi head with versi leaders. That way you could vary your sink rate with minimal change to your casting dynamics and deliver a more delicate cast. Very ecited to have found this group.

Hi Peter

Yes, Spey casting can be used for shad on the Potomac.  In fact it opens up areas on shore that are otherwise not conducive to fly fishing, like Gordon's and Walkers.  But you do need a sink tip to get the flies down.  I've done it and caught shad. I also had a lot of fun Spey casting at Falmouth Park on the Rapp this past Sunday with some folks from Orvis.

I've taken Spey lessons from Regan and he's a terrific instructor.  I really suck at it, but my incompetence at it is entirely on me.  LOL. My point is that if I can catch shad doing it, anyone can.

Perhaps you have heard the term "spey casting".  You have been curious, what does pet sterilization have to do with fly casting?

To clear that up, the sterilization is 'spay', not 'spey', though pronounced the same.  'Spey' actually refers to the Spey River in Scotland.

We will have a focus group on spey casting with single-hand and double-hand rods, and that will lead to a discussion on what is trout-spey. (that is definitely not trout sterilization).

"Curious and confused?  You won't be after this episode of Casting Church."  (Anyone get the 'Soap' intro play on words?)

Come on out, whether you are a novice, intermediate, or advanced caster, it is all fun to work on solving casting problems and casting challenges, particularly for shad.
If you are just getting started, this is a great way to meet people who can help.  There will be casting instructors on hand.
If you are preparing for an upcoming trip and looking to re-fresh your casting skills, this is a great opportunity.

Rappahannock River downstream of the Route 1 bridge there are two parks, one on the Northside and one on the Southside of the river. If the water continues to drop https://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?01668000 fishing from the bank may be an option.

Not much access from shore, but The Occoquan has a decent shad run, and handles high water a bit better.  They do rent Kayaks at the park - call to find out if they are available this weekend.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: CASTING CHURCH - Sun 10 April

Hi Regan- does water level effect Casting Church? Looks like we'll be in the parking lot on Sunday?
PS- LOVE the Soap reference!

We will have our casting get together on Sunday, 10 April at Fletcher's Cove from 8am to 11am.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Shad Fishing this weekend - alternatives to fletchers

Hey everyone!

Was going to try my luck on the Potomac tomorrow with a few of my buddies but with the high water, fletcher's cancelled our boat rental.  Wondering if there's any other places within 1.5 hours that might be good for shad fishing this weekend?  Or is fishing this weekend pretty much shot with all the rain we've had?

My friends don't have waders and such so preferably anything that allows for some bank fishing.  Appreciate any and all advice!
