Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Parking Question at Fletchers

I would think in the lower lot they would have a hard time getting the big boot vans and tow trucks thru the tunnel.

Either way, fishing is done at Fletcher’s for awhile.  No boats this weekend.

Vo,
I say you should go for it, if you don't have a car anymore at least you caught some shad.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} double hand practice

Hi all,

I'm looking at heading to fletchers monday afternoon around 1630-1700 and practice my double handed casting, and maybe catch a few fish. I'm a newbie but I'd trade drinks or dinner for some advice or lessons from someone who can teach me.

Thanks

Sorry, had the wrong link, reposting.

I've found it's also helpful to look at the upstream gage at Point of Rocks - if you see a huge spike on this gage, it will hit Chain Bridge about 6 hours later. Can help you pick up on an incoming flood that was caused by rain hundreds of miles away from where you will actually be fishing.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: 2017 shad season has begun

Mike,

Keep your eyes on the NWS prediction of river height at Little Falls: http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?gage=brkm2&wfo=lwx

This generally will overestimate future spikes a little, but it's useful. If it the gauge goes over 5 ft, Fletcher's won't rent boats.

From my experience, if the gauge is over 5 ft, is that the seem and fish move a little closer to shore--the shore casting is still limited but is easier under these conditions.

This is covered a bit in this thread--wading is of dubious legality (there are divergent rules in the National Park Service compendiums governing this area) and it is generally not safe at all in this area, but it is especially unsafe during high water.

Looks like rain most days over the next several days....

Would it still be practical to go shad fishing... using rain gear.... or would water conditions pretty much prevent safe and productive fishing?

If not, what locations would be most advisable in rainy weather?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Amazon Smile

Hey all,

Just received an email from Amazon Smile telling me how much they've donated to my chosen charity through my purchases. Receiving this email and watching the concervation-concious films last night at Arlington Cinema Drafthouse led me to this post.

If this is too much of a promotion, please let me know, but I figured I'd throw this out there for those who don't know about Amazonsmile.  Basically, smile is just regular amazon, but with a slightly different URL.  You choose a charity and they donate a small percentage (.5%) of every purchase you make to said charity.  I know many of you are environmentally conscience and with the current...erm...state of affairs, many environmental organizations could use every bit.  I've identified Potomac Conservancy as mine, but if there is ANY other organization you'd like to donate to, they are more than likely available.  Im going to order a bunch of stuff off of Amazon anyway, so may as well make some good out of it.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201365340

once again, if this is too much of a promotion, please take it down and accept my sincerest apologies.

Cheers,

Gregg

Yes, you can catch American Shad in the Occoquan.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fly fishing the Anacostia River

Couple of things to keep in mind:
  • The Anacostia is about 20 feet deep most of the way up and then about halfway drops to uniformly 5 foot depths all the way up to Bladensberg.
  • The river is not wadable below Bladensberg.  It is very much silt and mud.
  • The river is tidal and there are really no defined current seams to key in on.
  • What I’m told is most of the hickories spawn in the Potomac and tribs, and most of the Americans spawn in the Anacostia and tribs.
  • Don’t eat anything out of the Anacostia.  The Riverkeepers don’t for good reason.  There are 3 US Superfund sites located in the the river.

Hi there TPFR - Today I saw a short video from the Anacostia River Watershed Society today of a whole mess of shad swimming up the Anacostia, and I'm intrigued.   Has anyone gone fly fishing in the Anacostia - for shad or any other species - and if so, what was your experience?  If i go out, it would be in a small jon boat from the pier at Anacostia Park.

Thanks!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: 2 piece rods on Delta

Never done a 2-pc, but I haven't had issues with a 4-piece. They can fit in above/behind full size bags, so a reasonable gate agent won't have a problem. Flight attendants will often let me stow it in the coat closet too. Of course, I've also had a flip out when I tried to board with a suit bag as a third item, despite it fitting nicely on top of my regular carry on.

You'd also want to check what kind of plane you'll be flying. Some of the older/smaller planes may have dividers that make the compartment not wide enough.

As far as we know down at Fletcher's, the first hickory shad on a fly rod was caught Friday morning by Gregory Cook. Anyone catch one before that, there or at Chain Bridge? An American shad was caught on a fly Sunday evening but we don't know if it was the first. Spin fishers took several Americans at Gordon's Rock earlier on Sunday, including Gordon himself.

Thanks, Orvis kinda sorta on my way to fletchers from work so maybe I'll swing in and get some flies and something between 0x and 5x tippet. I have a Single hand 8wt I'll bring as well then, I really do want to practice some spey casting though so its a good excuse even if the rod is overpowered.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fly fishing the Anacostia River

Hi there TPFR - Today I saw a short video from the Anacostia River Watershed Society today of a whole mess of shad swimming up the Anacostia, and I'm intrigued.   Has anyone gone fly fishing in the Anacostia - for shad or any other species - and if so, what was your experience?  If i go out, it would be in a small jon boat from the pier at Anacostia Park.

Thanks!

Brian

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Thank You

I want to thank Rich Farino for hosting the flyfishing film tour again this year. Great movies that inspire and energize those of us with the passion to fish with a fly. Fun time had by all. Also best of luck in your new venture with district angling.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: 2017 shad season has begun

Hi Guys,

I have to be in the georgetown area and you've inspired me to practice with my new switch rod, I've got a 8ips sink tip head and some streamers but what leaders are you using for shad, I was just gonna use a 4ft of 0X I have laying around, should I use something lighter? how are these fish on an 8wt rod, should I just bring my 5wt?

Have missed the last three beer ties due to work travel so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someone has a ticket they can't use or a spare that needs a home.
