My guess is someone started calling brook trout "Appalachian wood trout" and it stuck in a very small area of Tennessee. In the second article on your google search they don't mentioned brook trout at all - just 'wood trout' and rainbows. Seems like a case of local slang to me. Google "#mrpajamapants" and I think you'll agree that slang terms for fish certainly exist in local populations. ;)On Wednesday, August...

I was up at Swains lock late last week fishing in the evening and the grasses were up and the fish, inactive. I gave up fishing on a sinking line due to the weeds, but it sounds like I should have kept at it. The top water was really slow. Just a few bluegill, and small ones at that. {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Ever heard of an "Appalachian wood trout"?
No, it's not the opening line to a corny joke my weird uncle Bob told me. I was in the Southern Appalachians of Northeast Tennessee for work earlier this week and was able to escape into some beautiful mountain streams to fish for what I presumed would be brookies by the looks of the stream I was fishing, Rocky Fork. Well, I ended up...

RE: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Potomac too hot to fish right now from Anacostia to Georgetown??
I fished the Potomac around Lock 7 last week. Water was gin clear and running nice. I fished around seams, drop off and pools and found some decent smallies (10-16"). Most of my success came in late afternoon using small clousers. Most of the bites occurred near the top of the water column. I also saw a few hellgrammites on some submerged rocks, but it was on my way off the water. Water was perfect temp for wet...

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Cooper Landing Alaska
You can do a float trip down the Kenai -- highly recommended. If your son wants to self guide, or has time after the float, he can do the following:- fish Quartz creek for Dolly Varden behind the spawning sockeyes. Quartz creek is the creek right beside the road as you drive from the Seward highway to the Kenai lake. Egg flies are the go.- fish the Russian river for Rainbows and Dolly Varden. I think the...
{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Potomac too hot to fish right now from Anacostia to Georgetown??
I have to admit, almost every weekend this time of year I try to get out of here and head west to cooler temps and cooler streams/rivers. And I will this weekend. However, I have some downtime at work and can leave a little earlier than normal. Given the big fish kill in the gardens, is it even worth it to try and fish the Washington Channel, Tidal Basin, bridges and structure on DC side of Potomac to Gtown or is the water too...

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Upper Potomac from Dam 4 to Shepardstown Recommendations?
Thanks Richard! We ended up doing the float to Snyder's Landing in a canoe, with a small trolling motor attached and an anchor. Total time with stops at likely holes and deep spots was about 8 hours. All in all, pretty good day! I pulled in a bunch of smallies and bluegill with both poppers and clouser minnow streamers, my poor father got skunked on his spinning tackle. Great stretch of river, but in my opinion the best fishing...
{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Inflatable Pontoon Boat
I've not floated the North Branch on it. Generally I use it for smallmouth bass floats. Just a couple weekends ago I floated the Upper James with a bunch of TPFRers and used my foldcat. We encountered a tricky little Class 2 rapid along the way. The boat is extremely stable in those situations and maneuvers well enough (as long as you aren't distracted by your hat being swept off your head by a tree like I was). The only...

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Gunpowder: how low is too low?
Length of the dropper all depends on conditions. Try 18" below the dry fly. You could also try a little longer at first (maybe 24"). Always easier to take away some line than add it!

Thanks Evan, that makes sense. I hit YouTube last night and several people seemed to share your thoughts. Any recommended length to hang that nymph? Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Gunpowder: how low is too low?
Gunpowder can be tough, that's for sure. In low, clear water I would ditch the streamers and bugger. The fish aren't going to be as willing to chase them very often in the water conditions we are seeing these days.
If you go back, I would try a dry/dropper rig. Pick something that floats really well and hang a small nymph off of it. For me, the smaller the nymph the better. Size 16-20.
Obviously, this is all personal preference...

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Gunpowder: how low is too low?
Got skunked today for my first trip out to the Gunpowder. My son caught a 10 inch bass right next to Prettyboy. I saw the fish but I think I need to work on my stealth mode...I saw them as the made a run for it! I was using a small black wooly bugger. Another guy was using an Adams fly on a tenkara and said he pick up 7 small trout from falls to Prettyboy.
Any suggestions for a rookie?
