Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Cedar Run- White Oak Canyon

Well, that's one of the best hikes in the park, so your starting off on the right foot.  If you don't mind bushwacking, I'd focus on the areas between the upper and lower falls.  The trail swings away from the run, and it's pretty rough moving, which of course means there's less pressure.  And there is some good holding water in there.  I've also seen a bunch of brookies up above the upper falls, higher than I thought it made sense.  So basically just keep your eye out.  I've had better luck (and worse hiking) on other runs in the area.

It seemed like the larger of the small pools all held fish. There were plenty of hikers and swimmers heading further up Cedar Run, but nobody disturbing the pools we targeted closer to the parking lot.

We talked to two fly fisherman in the parking lot that had fished White Oak with no luck- too many swimmers and dogs, even on a cooler rainy day. But, I've heard that there are less swimmers if you access White Oak from Skyline drive.

No matter what, I think you would be smart to get there early and avoid the weekend rush. I would focus on enjoying the hike and keeping an eye out for fishy spots on the way.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} The green head flies were bad at times, but.....

But we caught fish. Fished with my buddy who is the conservation director at IGFA in the everglades back country. We didn't have a bonkers day, but plenty of snook and baby tarpon were to be had. And I got to ride on one of the best flats boats I've ever been on - Hells Bay Whipray. The hull is only 600 pounds. Motor another 200. I also caught a jack and a speckled trout but didn't get pics. The everglades have been on my life list for a long time. Only the tarpon (4) came on the fly. The others were caught on soft plastics so the guy on the pole could fish too.

Matt,

To my knowledge, they never replied to anyone. They are "digging in" and so are we.

At this point, we are close to 1000 signers for the petition.

And we continue to meet with supervisors (LoCo) and other groups. This will get very interesting very soon.

Thanks for he support and thanks to everyone who signed the petition!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Cedar Run- White Oak Canyon

Either option would be good. I tried that area last summer and water levels were really low. However we've had no shortage of precipitation this year so it might be better. Situations like this or where a collapsible tenkara rod and a few flies really shines, it is no big decision or commitment to carry it.
As for flies those brookies are not usually picky so this time of year I'd bring a few that float really well in sizes 14-18 (eg, ants, foam beetles, parachute mayflies, caddis, royal wulff, or Mr.Rapidan) and a few standard type nymphs is never a bad idea. Call Murray's Fly Shop and ask about conditions and recommendations they'll steer you right. Good luck. Matt

Thanks all! I got it repaired at Rod & Reel Repair in VA and he only charged be 9 bucks. Quirky little shop and a very nice man. Highly recommend it for future repair. Wish I hadn't sent in my Redington rod for repair a few weeks back (15 dollar shipping + 30 dollar warranty charge, could have been fixed for 10 bucks!)....I need to be more careful throwing heavy streamers.

Working on a list of email addresses for their board members -- http://www.loudounwater.org/About/Current-Board-Members/

Would be nice if we could set up an email blast form on the website - where we can direct people via social media to send their thoughts and have it automatically go to a list of recipients - board members, Loudoun board of supervisors, etc.

Dear Mr. Peterson,

I was greatly dismayed when I read in the press recently that Loudoun County has suspended all public access to Beaverdam reservoir for four years, while improvements are made to the dam and unspecified studies are done. http://m.leesburgtoday.com/news/loudoun-water-closes-reservoir-access-begins-multi-year-renovation/article_0ba5ac32-ca2f-11e3-852c-001a4bcf887a.html?mode=jqm

While I certainly am in strong favor of improvements to critical local infrastructure and agree the lands around the reservoir could benefit from study and resource management, a blanket restriction on all public access to enjoy the reservoir seems very overblown and unnecessary.

I am an angler, for example, who has enjoyed the fishing in Beaverdam. I typically put a canoe in at the lot used by the high school rowing team, fish for a few hours, and return. I fail to see any new safety issues from such activity, or other ways in which small boat recreation, or fishing, would interfere with improvements to the dam.

I would ask that you and Loudoun County please consider reasonable ways to mitigate any risk or conflicts of interests as work progresses, and allow anglers and other Virginians to continue enjoying activities at the reservoir. Word about this is spreading in several locally based conservation and fishing organizations of which I am a member (Izaak Walton League, Trout Unlimited, Potomac River Smallmouth Club, Tidal Potomac  Fly Rodders, and the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership) and I know I'm not the only person interested in a more fair and reasonable decision.

I wish you well, and thank you for your attention and service to the public.

Very sincerely,

It is a live feed of where lightning strikes are occurring. It seems to be community based and you can buy a sensor to mount at your house to track lightning. The webpage isn't great as you can't zoom in to a specific area, but there is this one which uses the data from the first:

I should have hopped on this last night during the storm, would have been cool to watch.

Anyone ever fish the ponds at Claude Moore Park? I will be staying in that area in a couple weeks and was wondering if it's worth bringing the fly rod along.

to the doctor for treatment. I didn't catch anything but it was in the
middle of summer and I'm sure the pond water was near 90*.

John I've fished both with success. Goose Creek at Kephart Bridge Landing
in Landsdown off of Riverpoint Dr. I've caught smallmouth from the landing
down stream. To access Broad Run and the Potomac (channel behind the
island) I use Bles Park off of Riverside Pkwy and usually fish the area

Fishing hasn't been the best for smallmouth this year because of the

I worked on the Upper Kenai at Kenai Cache Outfitters and they can put together a solid Middle River Trip for you, but I would book it now. I would request Travis for that trip. I fyou wanted to do a walk in somewhere, Fly Bob is a local Cooper Landing legend. I was fortunate enough to have him as my AK trout mentor. He's an amazing fisherman and his fly tying/fishing passion will make you want to buy a tent and move out back behind the shop. He is also out of Kenai Cache Outfitters. Bob's trips have been featured in the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/07/magazine/the-sockeye-salmons-last-swim.html?_r=0). Kenai Cache also has the only Orvis store on the Peninsula. If those guys aren't available, Mystic Waters runs a good operation.

Mark, I will be in Seward for a reunion of my old Army unit and part of the activities planned include an off-shore Halibut fishing trip one day and a Salmon Fishing trip (not fly fishing) another day.  Besides these fishing trips there are day long activities planned each day of the reunion including a glacier tour, whiter water rafting, and dog sledding. There are 2 days that I will not  be participating in these activities, ie water rafting and dog sledding, which I could go fly fishing.  It is my understanding that the rainbow fishing will be closed until 6/11 so it may be possible to  go fish for them towards the end of the week long reunion.  Do you have any recommendations of guides or outfitters in that area?

Next Wednesday, the PRSC will hold their annual Boat Night at Riverbend Park starting at 6:00 PM. We have the gathering right next to the ramp and many different boats will be on display; kayaks, pontoons, jetboats etc.

Over the years, members of TPFR have come out to do fly casting demos.....and eat some good food and hang out with like minded folks. We are hoping that you can do it again this year.

The only requirement is that you bring a fly rod or three and show of your skills. While we do have some experienced fly casters in the club, we also have some members that have never cast a long stick.

If you want to come out, please let me know through this thread so I can get a head count..

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: River Bend

The key is "without rain."  That doesn't seem to happen this summer!  Fishing hasn't been the best for smallmouth this year because of the constant rain.

We were all shocked at this news article (link below) calling for the closure of and suspension of public access to Beaverdam reservoir for four+ years, while improvements are made to the dam and unspecified studies are done.

Many of us have made our views known by writing to various officials, speaking at public meetings and signing petitioners.

As well, many of us have enjoyed the fishing in Beaverdam.

We have asked that Loudoun County Water reconsider this action and we are putting a lot of pressure on them (civil) to do so.

Member of the club can help one last big push to hit 1,000 petition signatures before we meet with Loudoun Water next month. With support from Loudoun Supervisors Wiiliams, Reid, and Clarke, NVRPA, and Virginia State Game and Inland Fish, Facebook friends Clean Up Beaverdam and Loudoun Paddle Club, we have gained valuable attention. This story has had several write ups in our local newspapers with more to come. So now we need each of you to sign the petition and get get 1 or 2 more people to sign this week to push our message and gain Loudoun Water as a friend to the community. Many thanks to all of you and showing these petitions do matter. Link is below
