We found fish in the main channel from the mud/sand bar above the cove to below Walker's Point. That's anywhere from 7 to 40 feet deep from early to late AM. We left them biting. :( Due to the high wind and in order to float at the speed of the current, at times we had to row .....downriver. The trick seemed to be an aggressive vertical motion with a jig which looked like a herring. The river seemed to be teeming with life as we also snagged herring, smelt and winter shad. The only reason we did not drift further down was due to high wind, white caps and crew boats. Meanwhile the Ashad bite was happening on the DC side. It was a good day.

--Beautiful fish, Mike! Looks like you and Alex had a fun morning! Care to give us a hint as to how much water they were in? And how far off the bottom they were holding?Thanks!--Scott
Sent from my iPhoneShould anyone figure out how to vertical jig a weighted fly on a drift in the current you will be rewarded with a 30"+ striper. They are thick. As are the Ashad on the seams.<IMG_20140414_081029.jpg><IMG_20140414_072120.jpg>--On Mon, Apr 14, 2014 at 3:54 PM, Ben <blarson2589@gmail.com> wrote:
I was out early in the morning, just after sunrise. The tide was outgoing.--

One was deep in the middle of a swing and the other hit as I was lifting my line for a cast when my fly was almost out of the water. Definitely got the adrenaline going. I think pretty much any big streamer with some white will probably do the trick. Swinging flies deep in current has been most productive for me.When I first got on the water, I saw what looked like some stripers busting herring and was wondering if anyone had ever tried some big poppers early in the morning...might be worth a try...Still hoping for one of those 30 inchers I keep hearing about...Ben
