{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} 2013 Fishing Report

Thanks to this group and abundant access to great fish-filled waters, I had a very fun and successful 2013. Hitting 4MR throughout the year provided the quick fix and never disappointed with LMB and the ever present panfish. I was fortunate to fish in some very exotic locations too.  I realized last year that one should NEVER leave home without a rod and reel.

In Chang Mai, Thailand I landed few massive hybrid-catfish. At 80 lbs these might be the biggest fish I've ever landed from shore. The private pond was catch and release.  The method used to catch these monsters was to mash a baseball sized wad of bread onto a bread holder and embed the hook in the bread ball.  The fish would grab the ball and get the hook.  It took 15 to 20 minutes to land one. The pond was 15 minutes outside of town and once I found it, I spent all my free time going after these guys.

I spent a bit of time looking for info in fishing the Niger River in Mali, but it seems the only people who fish it are people that need to fish it.  I brought my gear just in case.  I paid off a couple of kids to canoe me into some reeds where I caught some very small fish.  I did catch a very interesting fish that had a two inch spike the stuck out the top of its back.  It should be a clue to not walk barefoot in the river. I found a hotel that had a bar perched out over the river and I talked them into letting me fish while I drank beer.  I set up a Carolina Rig and waited.  After a few minute I saw the tip of my rod drop and set the hook.  I found hard, only to land a shirt. My second catch was a bag.  I think I will be back there again this next year and will bring a different selection of gear.

My brother and I fished our way across Montana and Idaho for a few days in late August.  I got into some nice rainbows and cutthroat.  I caught something big out of the Salmon River, but I am not sure what they were.  They fought hard but once they were landed they didn't even struggle. Aside from the fishing the best part was the absence of a cell phone signal for 48 hours. No phone calls, no emails, no FB, nothing!

I hit the reefs of Kona, Hawaii for a week with my family.  Reading up before I left, most people discouraged me from attempting to fly fish on the Big Island.  I brought my gear anyways.  I hooked into a barracuda and a blue trevally, but only landed a trumpet fish....imagine a silver clarinet that swims.  I picked up a cheap spinning combo at walmart and got a collection of reef fish.  My nephew would join me on the rocks to catch the sunrise and the fish.  He said it was the highlight of his trip.

I closed out the year with a trip to a small pond in the woods of South Carolina.  My father-in-law pulled out a 9.5 lb LMB and I landed a few small ones.

2013 was so amazing that it will be hard to beat. But I will try....

Happy New Year and Tight Lines

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Winter SNP Fishing

Let me respond to the latter part of your post.  Yes, you should absolutely avoid wading in the gravel where the eggs are.  Even after hatching in February or so, the fry will still stay in the gravel.  Avoid all gravelly areas until well into spring.  You may or may not still see the redds, but you should familiarize yourself with the areas to avoid.  Great question.

My favorite pickerel fly is a chartreuse and white bunny fly on a 1/0 hook.  I trail 3 or 4 inches of white magnum strip and then palmer a crosscut chartreuse bunny strip up the shank.  I rub a bit of Softex on the tail to retard fouling.  Sometimes I use flash.  This is my main almost indestructible pickerel fly.  I generally use 12 inches of 20 pound wire bite tippet but will use 30 pound fluoro if it's all I have.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Winter Pickerel from Shore...Locations?

I picked up this one on the Jackson River right below the dam a few years ago.  It took a #4 Woolly Bugger on 0X Fluorocarbon which held up fine to the teeth.  Truth be told, I was actually just bombing long casts into the deep tailrace pool hoping to score a Moby Trout, so I can't say I was targeting it.  Apparently, before the dam was built, the Jackson was a major Pickerel river.  Wish I could have fished it back then, but I suppose you always lose something to gain something.  Oh, and definitely watch the teeth!  I grabbed onto that fly to get it out and the fish snapped my finger and left a few perfect tooth holes which proceeded to bleed for the next hour or so.  Those suckers are quick!

You don't NEED a steel leader, but I'd definitely consider a beefy shock tippet - maybe 20 lb. test, checked carefully after every fish.

I've been poking around for info on pickerel in the past couple days and I've found the same info on the Severn, South, and the Magothy.  I grew up on the South and my parents currently live on the Magothy.  If I can convince my father on putting the kayaks in the water, I might give it a shot in the next few weeks. I'll let you guys know if I have any luck.

Good luck to you guys if you go. Make sure the water levels aren't too high and stained or it will be tough fishing. My kayak friend and his buddies have been catching them up in the Severn, South, and Magothy rivers for the last month or so pretty regularly but seems like you would need a boat up there. I would think any of the eastern shore mill ponds would have them too. Most of my pickerel spots are in Virginia so I cant help you too much other than the Tuckahoe idea.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Fiberglass Rod Recommendations

I just wanted to thank everyone for their input on helping me pick out a rod and I am glad to see the thread has resulted in casting meet up. I wish I could be there but I will be in Birmingham Alabama this weekend to watch the might Vanderbilt Commodores take on Houston in the Compass bowl. For those curious, I ended up getting my Dad a Redington Butter Stick 3 wt. 7' with a 2/3 Drift reel and 3 wt Perception Fly Line to match. I never got the chance to cast any fiberglass rods, so I made my choice based on everyone's recommendations and relied heavily on the Fiberglass Manifesto website. I figured he could fish poppers for bluegill and work smaller streams for trout. One critical factor was the Butter Stick was the only one that I thought would be delievered by Christmas, unfortunately the fly shop my Dad and I use in Miami could not get one in time, so in the end I had to give him an IOU anyways. Still I think the anticipation fo it arriving in mid-January is kinda like having another Christmas day all over again.

Thanks again!

4 January Fiberglass Casting

My suggestion is 4 Mile Run Park on the south side of the run, on Mt Vernon Ave (just South of the South Glebe Rd intersection).  On the East side of the soccer field, there is a large grassy area that should be fine for lawn casting.

You can also see the outfall from this spot, although it looks like the tide will be high around 9am.  Current forecast is for clear skies, but cold air temps.

Across Mt Vernon Ave is a strip mall, but unfortunately no Starbucks.  I think there are some Starbucks shops along US1 on the way in...

If someone has a better spot and it is a more central point for everyone, I'm game.  Fletcher's Cove, the National Mall, one of the parks in Fairfax County, the park at Jones Point Dr?  I just figured 4MR is most ubiquitous with the folks on this site.

I plan on bringing my 6'6" Dave Lewis 3/4wt, 7'2" Barclay Glass, and a few Japanese Tenkara rods (not fiberglass, but a lot slower than graphite).

Is Jan 4th a date that everyone can support?

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Grass Carp / White Amur

my pattern is a lot less glamorous, which is also why i think the grassie took it, because it just looked like a grass/moss fly.
But what i did is kind of a woolly bugger variation. I had a small olive marabou plume sticking out the back of a size 6 hook,
then tied in a hackle and wrapped it up to super light bead eyes and flattened the hackle on the top and bottom by pulling chenille
over from the back on the top and bottom so the hackle only stuck out the side.

I only managed to stick the one grassie, but had several more takes.
sorry if those descriptions were hard to understand
